An Analysis of New Student Orientation Programs at U.S. Four-Year Colleges

How Can Administrators Enhance the First and Major Milestone of a Student's Academic Journey?

Effective orientation programs offer students experiences that reinforce their sense of belonging to the institution and positively affect retention and graduation rates.

Abstract: This study examines new student orientation (NSO) programs of 65 four-year U.S. colleges, with a focus on a subset of 39 colleges offering NSOs with available program schedules. The 39 programs were analyzed in detail for content and key elements such as formats, topics, underlying learning theories, and high-impact practice-related activities. Data are drawn from both online orientation schedules for each program and survey responses received from educators at each of the associated institutions. NSOs offered by community colleges and those offered by the four-year colleges studied were also compared. The study results are intended to benefit college administrators and faculty responsible for developing freshman orientations.

An Analysis of Instructional Expenditures in U.S. Public Higher Education

From 2004 Through 2015

Results indicate that, when adjusted for inflation, instructional expenditures at U.S. public institutions increased from 2004–2015; however, evidence suggests that the rise was more modest and less consistent than may be known.

Abstract: Due to the rising price of tuition, the prevailing narrative regarding higher education is that the cost of delivering a college degree is increasing substantially. However, the cost of delivering an education is not definitively linked to the price in tuition paid to attend. Prior studies confirmed small increases in instructional expenditures per full-time-equivalent student from the 1980s to 2000; however, more recent trends in instructional costs are relatively unknown. The purpose of this study was to track instructional expenditures from 2004 to 2015 at U.S. public two-year and four-year institutions, and to calculate those expenditures as a proportion of U.S. Gross Domestic Product.

This session is about the challenges and opportunities associated with designing the Beijing home for a newly established international fellowship program—Schwarzman Scholars—at Tsinghua University. The design and construction process exemplified methods for harmonizing Eastern and Western principles, customs, and cultures. The project team was, in many ways, the first class of Schwarzman Scholars. You will leave the session with a strong sense of the challenges and opportunities of planning an academic facility and program simultaneously.

Abstract: This session describes how we used data visualization to spark critical conversations as we evolved 1960s-era space guidelines into modern approaches. Key aspects of the space planning process at California State University-Chico were facilitated through data-informed discussions involving demographics and space analytics, which were used to align our plan with strategic directions, pedagogy, and anticipated resources. We'll share how space and campus planning discussions can be informed by environmental scanning tools, benchmarking, data visualization techniques, and scenario-based modeling.
