Abstract: A long-term decline in birth rates raises fundamental planning questions for higher education as the pool of 18-year-olds contracts after 2025. This Planning for Higher Education series explores how planners and leaders can use the time we have to prepare for some of the most wrenching changes in a generation. This article, Part 1, surveys the planning horizon as we emerge from COVID-19 and describes the challenges ahead. Part 2 considers specific planning strategies institutions can adopt to meet the challenge. Part 3 tackles perhaps the most daunting challenge: how to mobilize institutions to actually do what needs to be done, however inconvenient (or worse) that may be.

Abstract: This session focuses on the unique financial challenges facing community colleges due to the pandemic. In addition to a brief overview of the range of financial challenges being experienced by the sector, two campus-based leaders will describe the reality at their respective institutions. The session will highlight the role integrated planning, aligned with resource management, plays in establishing financial stability that can support enhanced institutional effectiveness.

Abstract: As Federal Work-Study (FWS) programs are coming under national scrutiny for their lack of proven effectiveness and antiquated systems, the University of Missouri-Kansas City reevaluated the culture surrounding its student employee positions. After collaborating with financial aid personnel and identifying key stakeholders, a new program was created to focus on professional-readiness skills and developing a culture of high-quality, campus-wide customer service. Former expectations of FWS positions were revised to include more intentional career-readiness opportunities. Doing so required investing in professional development for supervisors and support for mentoring student employees. This article presents the planning and collaboration methods that are vital to implementing an innovative program and provides insight for other universities seeking to professionalize their FWS programs.

Abstract: The pandemic changed the higher ed landscape, and as we look ahead, this discussion will help you think through enrollment challenges, discuss tuition increases, examine current perceptions of the value of an online education, and consider financial aid for fall 2020.

Abstract: Working across boundaries is essential for student success, but also incredibly difficult to do. This session looks at the collaboration between enrollment management and departmental faculty—specifically the planning, monitoring, and communication of student progress in an online doctoral program. You will learn techniques to improve communication between departments that historically work independent of each other, along with opportunities for future interdepartmental partnerships that improve student success.

Abstract: Stockton University grew its 2017 freshman class by 32 percent (375 students) by implementing a systems approach to enrollment management. We will present the strategic and collaborative methods to our success and share how Stockton’s Chief Planning Office played an important role in breaking down common silos that impeded efforts to collaborate, innovate, and succeed. We will discuss the statistical tools, operational improvements, and leadership techniques put in place to support Stockton’s growth, including new weekly reports and cross-divisional planning efforts.

With a heavy use of SCUP resource materials, SCUPers Doug and JoEllyn Fountain have written the book they wish someone had handed them when they began working for eight years with a rapidly growing university in Uganda. “While North American universities are developing LEED certified buildings, we were trying to pave roads and get stable electricity.
