Building Community with New Dining Experiences

Carefully integrating campus dining strategies into student centers, particularly given today’s ubiquitous digital technologies, has the potential to create and enhance student face-to-face interactions and informal learning.

Abstract: The history and best practices of campus dining planning and design are considered in the light of student centers and their overall effectiveness in boosting socialization and positive educational experiences, exploring new campus trends, accommodating increased diversity, and reinforcing institutional mission. Approaches for integrating flexible dining experiences with student centers to improve informal learning, inclusivity, transparency, and convenience are reviewed, with consideration of the increasing use of personal digital devices. The article demonstrates the value and importance of leveraging carefully integrated campus dining strategies in student centers and elsewhere for memorable learning and campus-life experiences.

An Exploration of Administrative Bloat in American Higher Education

Administrative bloat, the ballooning growth of administrative functions and personnel in U.S. higher education, is the unintended consequence of several factors and can be mitigated to some extent through deliberate strategies.

Abstract: This article evaluates administrative bloat, the ballooning growth of administrative functions and personnel, in American higher education. This evaluation was undertaken through a review of the available literature describing administrative bloat. Though unintentional, increased spending and government requirements for accountability may have contributed to overall growth and cost in higher education. Similarly, the changing composition of faculty—in terms of tenure-track faculty, annual contracts, and adjunct faculty—may have also played a role in the increased influence that administration has over campus policy and curricular decisions. Strategies to mitigate the cost of administrative bloat and to balance campus decisions between faculty and administration are suggested.

P3 Performance for Higher Education

This is a SCUP Fellow Research Project Final Report for the 2016–2017 program. The researcher’s intention was to better understand P3 models and learn how they have performed, possibly generating some useful lessons for how P3 models can be applied with desired outcomes.
Abstract: Public-Private Partnership (“P3”) procurement models for built infrastructure serving higher learning institutions started to gain attention in North America in the late 1990s—mostly as an alternative approach to adding student housing at select universities and colleges. More recently, P3 models have been applied to a diverse range of higher learning projects, with some serving core academic and research functions.

Although many institutions are considering P3 approaches among their options to address emerging pressures to expand or update their facilities, their implementation is not yet common. The researcher’s intention was to better understand P3 models and learn how they have performed, possibly generating some useful lessons for how P3 models can be applied with desired outcomes.

An Approach to the Preparation or Revision of a Master Plan for a Nigerian Polytechnic

Abstract: This article presents an approach for the preparation of a feasible master plan for a proposed polytechnic. It identifies and discusses key steps common to all methods used in the preparation of an institutional master plan. The object is to provide pertinent information to guide the preparation of a master plan that ensures a successful implementation and fulfillment of the institution’s objectives. It was concluded that the adoption and implementation of an appropriate master plan for a named polytechnic greatly facilitates the realization of the institution’s vision and mission.

Abstract: The design-build delivery approach, in which design and construction services are contracted through a single entity, has the potential to help higher education institutions control costs, streamline processes and communications, and more efficiently and effectively meet project objectives. This article examines the relationship between the University of North Georgia and design-build firm Pond, describing the process of design-build and highlighting two projects, the replacement of a dining hall floor and the renovation of a science classroom. The success of these projects demonstrates the benefits of integration and collaboration inherent in the design-build model.

College Campus Landscapes Within a Learning Ecosystem

College campus landscapes may help restore student attentional capacity for learning when intentionally viewed as educational resources or integrated with academic content.

Abstract: College campus landscapes are touted as symbols of “greenness,” displaying trees, vegetation, and flowering bushes for aesthetic appeal. Features such as a lawn to sit on between classes or a tree to gather under for course sessions may collectively and purposefully enhance student capacity for cognitive functioning and information processing or, simply, “learning.” In a place of learning where virtual environments and campus landscapes coexist, attention is an essential element of perceptual and cognitive operations. A key goal of the study described in this article is to better understand how to leverage regular and purposeful interactions with campus landscapes to help restore student attentional capacity for learning.

Abstract: Higher education has entered a new paradigm in relation to organizational operations and assessment. The days of ever-expanding budgets with little or no accountability are gone. Given the demands of multiple internal and external stakeholders trying to influence or control the institution, there seems to be constant stress on the top administrator to do more with less. Today’s college and university presidents face new and more complicated situations that were not faced by their predecessors, and their ability to handle those stressful variables can affect everyone involved with the institution. Job satisfaction is an individualistic component of any position, and a positive outlook shown by the top administrator can have a far-reaching impact on all stakeholders.
