Abstract: 2019 presents a changing landscape as concerns mount over environmental decline, increasing atmospheric carbon, and competition for resources. Across field after field, research demonstrates the impact of the built environment on climate change and the essential role retooling the built environment must play in addressing it. Globally, a massive reallocation of resources has begun as nations commit to addressing climate change and the social and economic equity challenges confronting our increasingly crowded planet.

To achieve Paris Agreement targets and advance the New Urban Agenda adopted at Habitat III, architects, planners, and owners must fundamentally transform how buildings are designed, constructed, and operated. Creative and courageous people are forging new pathways full of promise and hope.

Institutions of higher learning have always been laboratories for testing new approaches at multiple scales—building, campus, and institutional. This keynote will articulate the compelling 21st century challenges and opportunities for the design and planning fields in higher education.

Abstract: Sharing space is one way to achieve the goal of highly utilized facilities, but how can we effectively share space and design space for sharing? Current strategies for sharing space tend to focus on shared functionality, but even seemingly unrelated programs can share facilities if we plan and design them for effective co-location. In this session, you will learn operational and planning strategies that will help you to both identify potential programs for sharing and provide a framework for designing your shared environment.

Abstract: This tour will explore the history and development University of Maryland, College Park's campus along with the UMD Arboretum and Botanical Garden. We'll discuss the organization of the campus from its 1803 origins to its 20th century expansions, which created iconic spaces lined with Colonial Revival structures. Then we'll look at the campus as both layered landscape typologies and an instrument of pedagogy and research, focusing on the formation of UMD Arboretum and Botanical Garden.

Abstract: Allied health facilities are evolving into active, problem-based learning laboratories. High fidelity manikins, sophisticated equipment, augmented reality, virtual anatomy, innovation labs, and community clinics are transforming medical education spaces. This session will explore current and emerging approaches for medical teaching environments that enhance learning outcomes as well as inventive ways of leveraging building infrastructure for maximum functionality. You will learn about current modalities and how they are shaping allied health facilities in different case studies along with challenges and opportunities associated with new and renovated facilities.

Abstract: This session will examine the successful process behind planning Trippe Hall, a residence hall at Penn State Behrend. The design process incorporated student input at various stages, from schematic design to furniture selection. Attracting prospective students means providing spaces where they want to cultivate their education and community. You will discover new ways to foster student engagement throughout your building design process, resulting in spaces that are ideal for today’s students.

Abstract: The “Greater College Park Initiative” is a signature multi-year effort in President Wallace Loh’s leadership and administration to continue positive town/gown relations with development that enhances both the university campus and surrounding communities.

This talk provided an overview of University of Maryland's (UMD) strategic plan and how it is supported by the five-year update to the university’s facilities master plan, approved in 2017. It discussed current local and regional planning initiatives as well as campus and community development projects, including the associated partnerships and collaborations with municipal, organizational, and private-sector partners.

Abstract: How can we authentically engage students to make a positive impact on their environment? We will show how the planning and design process at the University of Virginia's (UVA) Student Activities Building made students a co-equal partner, used social science tools to identify what students valued, and amplified students' ability to guide design. You will learn how to engage students at your institution by applying discovery techniques, design thinking, journey mapping, and purposeful facilitation techniques to traditional programming and design problems.

Abstract: As institutions build out their campuses and land becomes limited, they must find creative and economical ways to expand. Johns Hopkins University (JHU) leased a high-rise building in downtown Baltimore as an alternative campus environment to develop its new Carey Business School, a strategic move JHU made to connect to business leaders, faculty, and potential students. The business school has taken on more space as it has grown, which required the school to plan through the lens of short-term and medium-term timeframes in a high-rise environment. This session will delve into the opportunities and challenges involved with locating a professional school in a leased, downtown, high-rise building mixing students with other occupants of the building.

Abstract: This session will explore in-depth case studies of two interdisciplinary centers for STEM learning, innovation, and entrepreneurship, one at a leading liberal arts college (Washington and Lee University), and the other at a large research university (Virginia Commonwealth University). Leaders involved in the planning, design, operation, and evolution of two successful STEM and innovation centers will share the most impactful decisions affecting the long-term success of their work, including how location, governance, funding, programming, and promotion influence dynamic interdisciplinary results.

Abstract: Both the City of Bridgeport and the University of Bridgeport were experiencing a renaissance before Superstorm Sandy struck in 2012. Now, they are working together to catalyze greater growth through a commitment to environmental resilience. The city and the university have partnered on a new project that achieves different, but compatible goals. This approach has created access to additional (and unusual) project funding and financing. In this session we will outline strategies for identifying multi-benefit projects, including finding potential partners and alternative avenues for project implementation.
