The Relationship between Accreditation and Integrated Planning

2019–2020 SCUP Fellow Sue Gerber—Research Presentation

This discussion explores the findings from a year-long SCUP Fellows Research Project on the relationship between integrated planning and accreditation. Using the Middle States Commission on Higher Education as a case study and the SCUP integrated planning maturity model as a framework, we discuss potential synergies to support institutional planning.
Abstract: In the current higher education climate, the importance of integrated planning cannot be overstated. Accreditors and planners can work together to assist institutions develop a culture of integrated planning. This discussion explores the findings from a year-long SCUP Fellows Research Project on the relationship between integrated planning and accreditation. Using the Middle States Commission on Higher Education as a case study and the SCUP integrated planning maturity model as a framework, we discuss potential synergies to support institutional planning.

Abstract: In this conversation, William Knight, Assistant Provost for Institutional Research and Effectiveness, Miami University, addresses how his team has developed data dashboards for administration and faculty to provide insight into Learning Management System (LMS) use, enrollment projections, and overall student access and success. He then discusses trends he’s noticed at HLC and thoughts on how campuses can begin discussions around staff capacity, curriculum success, and sunsetting programs, ultimately strengthening their sustainability and easing accreditation work. Dr. Bill Knight has two roles on campus—working on IR and IE, and serving as the accreditation liaison. He is also a peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). Abstract: For most institutions of higher learning to thrive amid the shifting demographics, financial outlooks, and value propositions of the 21st century, they must design and implement change that is comprehensive rather than compartmental. Since such change comes hard to institutions steeped in century-old traditions, there are few colleges or universities that have undertaken it. Hiram College (OH) is an exception. Given the dearth of lessons from the field, the Hiram College president offers this constructive and realistic example of systemic change and the five possible steps that academic leaders and trustees elsewhere might consider before triggering it.
