Leading with Culture and Community to Transform a University Building

We will share the planning behind the transformation of Yale Law School's Baker Hall and demonstrate how deeply engaging the new occupant's culture can powerfully guide building transformation.
Abstract: How can a university building, intended for short-term use, be re-purposed to support over-all university planning, embody the culture of a new user, and enhance that user group's pedagogy? Reusing campus structures can be highly effective, but limitations and pre-conceptions can be challenging. We will share the planning behind the transformation of Yale Law School's Baker Hall and demonstrate how deeply engaging the new occupant's culture can powerfully guide building transformation.

Transform Educational Facilities for Innovative Learning and Environmental Stewardship

We'll share recent examples of existing buildings that were transformed for new use and discuss the connection between carbon and building reuse.
Abstract: Campus planners are tasked with creating 21st century learning environments, moving towards carbon neutrality, and repairing buildings that are near the end of their useful lives. Transformative reuse addresses these issues. With creative design and programming, under-utilized campus buildings from all eras can be transformed into sustainable, thriving, innovative learning environments that align with current and future needs. We'll share recent examples of existing buildings that were transformed for new use and discuss the connection between carbon and building reuse.

Ensuring Research Resilience Through Programmatic and Facilities Alignment

Abstract: Interdisciplinary scientific research is the new normal in academia. Using Alumni Surveys to Assess the Impact of Innovative Learning Spaces on Development of Career-Ready Soft Skills

The design, implementation and results of this SCUP Fellowship research project will be highlighted and compared to other assessment methods with the goal of understanding your own institution’s assessment needs and plans around active learning spaces.
Abstract: Campus planners have invested time and resources in designing and implementing innovative learning spaces that optimize evidence-based pedagogical approaches embracing collaborative, real-world teaching and learning. But to what degree do these physical spaces enhance learning and honing of soft skills that are ranked highly by today’s employers? To address this question, 2018/19 SCUP Fellow Jeffrey Ashley engaged alumni through surveys to quantify the development of collaborative skills in innovative classroom environments. The design, implementation and results of this SCUP Fellowship research project will be highlighted and compared to other assessment methods with the goal of understanding your own institution’s assessment needs and plans around active learning spaces.

A Growing Business School’s Vertical Campus in a Leased Downtown Location

This session will delve into the opportunities and challenges involved with locating a Johns Hopkins University's new business school in a leased, downtown, high-rise building mixing students with other occupants of the building.
Abstract: As institutions build out their campuses and land becomes limited, they must find creative and economical ways to expand. Johns Hopkins University (JHU) leased a high-rise building in downtown Baltimore as an alternative campus environment to develop its new Carey Business School, a strategic move JHU made to connect to business leaders, faculty, and potential students. The business school has taken on more space as it has grown, which required the school to plan through the lens of short-term and medium-term timeframes in a high-rise environment. This session will delve into the opportunities and challenges involved with locating a professional school in a leased, downtown, high-rise building mixing students with other occupants of the building.
