Creative Approaches from Urban Universities

We'll highlight approaches and lessons learned from two New York City institutions during the pandemic, including creatively retrofitting their campus facilities amidst a crisis period of declining revenue and enrollments.
Abstract: Urban campuses are under stress, but in this session we'll share planning and design approaches to help urban institutions thrive as well as navigate strategic priorities, partnerships, programming changes, facilities, and real estate strategies. We'll highlight approaches and lessons learned from two New York City institutions during the pandemic, including creatively retrofitting their campus facilities amidst a crisis period of declining revenue and enrollments. Reinvigorating a Campus Landmark

Transforming Stirling’s Museum

Beginning with the project's conception and taking you through its planning, design, and construction, we will outline our investigation, historic research, and analysis of Harvard University's Stirling-designed postmodern museum to inform its transformation into a vibrant academic building housing a variety of programs.
Abstract: All colleges and universities have existing building stock that they need to repurpose in order to fit contemporary campus paradigms. Beginning with the project's conception and taking you through its planning, design, and construction, we will outline our investigation, historic research, and analysis of Harvard University's Stirling-designed postmodern museum to inform its transformation into a vibrant academic building housing a variety of programs. In this session, we'll establish a strategic and creative framework for adaptive reuse that you can use to reposition historic and architecturally-significant buildings on your campus.

By moving these programs and resources from relatively isolated campuses into an existing ecosystem, university leaders are signaling the urban campus’s value in both attracting the right talent and supercharging their research capabilities. Abstract: Students who participate in off-campus programs frequently desire more on-campus integration, but limited financial resources require creative solutions to optimize space utilization and effectiveness. Eastern Michigan University’s College of Business has been located off campus in downtown Ypsilanti since 1991. For cultural and financial reasons, the university started to explore bringing the college back on campus. Abstract: We’re living in challenging times and other crises are sure to follow. Having the proper skills and culture will mean the difference between success and failure. This session will introduce you to concepts about preparing for this adversity. Institutional leaders often rely on ineffective processes for crisis management, but we’ll provide you with a framework and tools that will allow you to more constructively navigate crises. We don’t learn from our experiences—we learn from reflecting on them. Come share and reflect on your experiences with your peers and learn a new framework to help you lead in a crisis.
