Abstract: The Okanagan Charter: An International Charter for Health Promoting University and Colleges provides a common language, principles, and framework for integrating complex issues of health, wellbeing, and sustainability on campuses. This session will show how planners can use the Okanagan Charter as a framework to promote health and wellbeing in the built environment, along with policies and culture. We'll also talk specifically about how the quality and design of the physical environment plays a critical role in the promotion of health and wellbeing.

Digging Into UMass Boston's Transformational Utility, Landscape, and Roadway Project

Abstract: The University of Massachusetts Boston was an insular, car-centric campus built on a former landfill. Now, it is becoming an inviting and pedestrian friendly campus, updated for the 21st century. We'll describe the massive Utility Corridor and Roadway Relocation project that transformed the campus and share lessons learned from implementing a master plan—with focus on landscape design, multi-modal access and circulation, sustainability, and new utilities—while maintaining an occupied campus on an environmentally unique oceanside site.

They used a highly inclusive process to create a CFP that guided strategic decisions and shifted institutional culture.

This process fosters transparency in each unit's accomplishments, challenges, and priorities by holding annual open hearings that culminate with executive-level feedback on units’ annual plans and prioritization for fiduciary support. You will gain ideas for implementing such a process at your institution by exploring timing considerations, content of hearings, planning templates, and follow-up reporting and monitoring.

Modifying the Strategic Planning Engine

A Case Study

Using the Strategic Planning Engine model resulted in a more objective, replicable, scalable, flexible, and transparent planning process with useful and relevant results.

Abstract: Academic strategic planning can be difficult given the bevy of stakeholders and often multiple sets of accreditation criteria. Recognizing the limits of the traditional SWOT model, our program chose to use the Strategic Planning Engine model. The model itself is quite laborious, and to increase its usability, we simplified the environmental assessments. Our results proved to be useful and relevant, and we developed a series of feasible objectives. In this article, we describe and evaluate our experience. In comparison to SWOT, we found this process to be more objective and replicable, scalable and responsive to multiple criteria, flexible to accommodate changing strategic plans or criteria, and transparent. With that being said, we caution about the level of labor required and organization and communication needed. Finally, we recommend implementing a leadership team, a communication plan, and a plan on how to respond to uncontrollable circumstances and developing a level of comfort with limited resource allocation.
