Using COVID-19 to Push Sustainability Forward

This webinar will discuss finding ways to keep sustainable packaging for different styles of service, operational hurdles for trash pickup, and how to tell your campus' story to keep sustainability programs alive. Learn how speed, safety, and sustainability can coexist, as well as how food waste and food insecurity have been affected as a result of COVID-19, and what can be done to combat them.
Abstract: Many campuses have been forced to rapidly adjust dining options as a result of COVID-19, which has required creative solutions to continue offering students safe options despite limited operations. Unfortunately, single-use plastic containers have only become more prevalent throughout global food service operations in an effort to reduce spreading the virus, but this has resulted in a backslide for campuses' sustainability efforts.

Shared Leadership for Academic Success and Crisis Management

Freeman A. Hrabowski III has led a transformation of UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) from a young, regional institution to an innovative research university. In our opening keynote, he discusses how—by taking a hard look in the mirror, understanding strengths and weaknesses, assessing opportunities and challenges, and engaging in difficult conversations—an empowered campus can innovate in course redesign, group-based and experiential learning, entrepreneurship and civic engagement, academic inclusion, and faculty diversity.
Abstract: Freeman A. Hrabowski III has led a transformation of UMBC (University of Maryland, Baltimore County) from a young, regional institution to an innovative research university. Abstract: The global challenge of climate change demands new paradigms of leadership that prioritize interdisciplinary solutions and the voices of marginalized communities. Universities are uniquely situated to lead the way. We will explore ways that a design thinking process can build a visible culture of sustainability at the hyper-local campus scale and drive climate action across academics, governance, and operations. Aligning climate action with existing priorities creates synergies, especially where stakeholders may already be stretched thin. Learn how a design thinking approach facilitates this type of cross-disciplinary work.
