Abstract: Traditional strategic planning can lead to a static plan that does little to inspire implementation or true change. This session will detail a process that promotes buy-in and engagement while providing structured frameworks to support implementation and assessment. Our framework provides support for a campus community to 'live' its institutional strategic plan through the strategic planning cycle (SPC) at the unit level, informing the realization of institutional goals and outcomes. We'll provide our tools and approaches for you to access and review, as well as the rationale for developing support for your own campus communities to 'live' their strategic plan.

Abstract: Build Capacity for Integrated Planning

Whether you’re preparing a committee for an upcoming planning process or simply looking for directions for your own professional development, the Integrated Planning Competencies can help you determine the knowledge, skills, and dispositions your institution needs to advance integrated planning.

Integrated planning requires building capacity in the people who do planning so they have the necessary knowledge and skills for success. But higher education institutions that focus only on developing planning-related expertise often face hurdles when they attempt integrated planning. Why? Because colleges and universities are complex environments and using an integrated planning approach in those environments requires a wide range of knowledge, skills, and dispositions. Some of the required expertise might seem obvious (like writing goals or analyzing information). But some of it may be less so—particularly expertise related to “soft” skills or human skills, like communication or collaboration.

To provide more clear and specific guidance, SCUP identified competencies—knowledge, skills, and dispositions—that individuals need for successful integrated planning. We analyzed the experiences and viewpoints of around 300 planners and higher education administrators in order to surface the competencies—both obvious and inconspicuous—that underpin integrated planning success.

Abstract: With a shortage of skilled labor in the construction industry, the construction technology program at North Lake College aims to close that gap while creating an attractive, career-focused educational alternative to the traditional four-year college degree. We'll illustrate how industry-academic partnerships led to the reimagining of vocational education in a new, didactic facility for construction sciences. Abstract: From its beginnings in 1891, Philadelphia’s Drexel University has been a distinctly and intentionally urban institution. This campus tour will explore the campus by era, illustrating how various forces and prevailing attitudes towards city life have influenced the campus’s evolution. We will begin our tour with the extraordinary Main Building and conclude by sharing recent partnerships—with developers, the School District of Philadelphia, and others—that are enlivening the campus and strengthening its connections to the city.

Abstract: North American institutions have traditionally viewed their lands and histories through a western-oriented cultural lens. Awareness and inclusion of indigenous cultures can be useful in achieving desired outcomes for members of indigenous communities. Creating meaningful indigenous cultural recognition and inclusion on campus is as much about the process as it is the outcomes. Ryerson University's experience with indigenous placemaking offers valuable, practical insights into a process that can help your institution to respect and advance indigenous cultures while balancing many other contextual factors.

Abstract: The disruptive nature of a post-COVID world provides the perfect opportunity for institutions to use scenario planning as a tool to navigate through an uncertain future. Scenario planning is especially useful for communicating external and internal trends and bridging a discussion between the most recent visioning exercise and transition. In this presentation, we'll demonstrate a step by step how-to for you to apply on your own campus with a vivid description of deliverables, tools, and 'gotchas.'

Abstract: Current research shows that 81% of employees want to work in a hybrid model post-pandemic. This presents us with the opportunity to re-imagine how we view the campus workspace and achieve institutional goals. In this session, we'll share how to develop a workspace roadmap that uses the lenses of people, space, culture, policy, and technology. Join us to learn from our process of using data collection, analysis, and consensus building to inform and solve space shortages with increased workspace utilization across campus.
