The University of Minnesota follows the state’s sustainable building guidelines, specifically Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), and uses post-occupancy evaluations (POE) to measure user satisfaction with campus buildings. In this session, we’ll demonstrate how to implement sustainability initiatives, which have a significant impact on campus building performance and by extension, user performance and wellbeing.

Creating Empathy-Driven Design Collaborations with Virtual Reality

We will demonstrate how we incorporated VR into stakeholder engagement for the University of Virginia's Student Health and Wellness Center to address health outcomes, promote student learning, and collaborate with interdisciplinary partners across campus.
Abstract: Multiple entities within institutions often have competing values, but virtual reality (VR) simulation can help overcome this challenge by creating an accessible platform for building a collective vision. We will demonstrate how we incorporated VR into stakeholder engagement for the University of Virginia's Student Health and Wellness Center to address health outcomes, promote student learning, and collaborate with interdisciplinary partners across campus. Encouraging stakeholders to virtually test a space's impact on health and learning will help you to advance decision-making, leverage diverse expertise, and capture empathy-driven insight to create a more efficient and intelligent design process at your institution.

Abstract: In today’s economy, 7 out of 10 open jobs require technical training. Industries are turning to community colleges to solve their workforce training needs. In this session, we will discuss the Construction Education Center, a state-of-the-art facility at Metropolitan Community College’s Fort Omaha campus, that facilitates project-based learning to bring industry partners, non-profits, and students together under a common vision. We will explore exemplary active-learning environments and the evaluation methodology we used to measure how these environments have elicited learning behaviors that foster student engagement. You will learn which aspects of the learning environment are important to measure, how to measure them, and how the collected data connects to metrics that matter to institutions.
