Abstract: There are many internal and external forces that impact higher education; how can you be intentional about examining and understanding these trends? From demographic shifts, politics, and social movements to the evolving economy and new technologies, regular environmental scanning can help your institution make better, more strategic decisions—both in planning and day-to-day.

Abstract: This session will discuss how Michigan State University re-envisioned 140 acres through an integrated planning and exploratory design process that required continual adaptation. When building a vision for large land parcel redevelopment as a mixed-use, vibrant district, it is important to have an adaptive planning process with strong leadership and inclusive dialogue. We will show you how to see your institution's land from a new perspective, apply fresh ideas about mixed-use campus space, and use an integrated planning process to build consensus in times of change.

Abstract: Planning for the future of higher education has become increasingly dominated by the rapid evolution of new technological tools and habits. The fast pace of innovation has shortened our horizon on the future of higher education, and technology's dominance has distracted our thinking about the greater purposes of higher education in our evolving society. In this session, we will broaden our view into the future and explore higher education's role over the long term as a critical agent of social progress. As we plan for the future, what should we consider to ensure higher education institutions continue to be effective catalysts for the intelligence, ingenuity, and humanity that are critical to social progress?

Abstract: Examine a number of cases where Butler University (a private institution) leveraged relationships with public and private partners to provide value to students and the greater community.

Abstract: On-campus living has been linked to student success and is a key factor in admissions decisions. As campuses look to expand and improve their housing inventories in a challenging fiscal environment, there are more options than ever available. One institution will share its recent experiences with several of these options. The University of Massachusetts (UMass) Lowell has more than doubled its on-campus housing inventory in the past five years using a combination of P3, real estate acquisitions, and conventional construction. This session will compare the relative benefits and particular challenges in utilizing these types of housing delivery methods. Come learn from campus facilities planning and student affairs officials, who will address the pros and cons of different delivery methods (P3, purchase/renovation, and conventional construction) from the perspective of up-front costs, operating and maintenance factors, student experience, and functionality.
