Abstract: Many campuses face real estate pressures, reduced funding, and aging assets, but often lack complete data sets or tools for visualizing the connection between campus priorities. Abstract: Buildings contribute over a third of global carbon emissions and are a key focus for decarbonization. As legislation phases out natural gas and enforces stricter efficiencies, campuses must adapt to the demands of all-electric building design. In this session, experts from the University of California (UC) will cover strategies, insights, and costs of decarbonization with the goal of building a more sustainable and healthy future. Abstract: Campus housing is foundational for student retention and academic success, yet it's often beyond the means of many students. To address the growing crisis of student homelessness, the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) developed an affordable, co-housing model that changes the conversation around equity and diversity. In this session, we'll explore the unique programmatic elements necessary for developing an equitable campus community. This case study will introduce a new model for vertically integrated co-housing solutions that you can apply on your campus when planning affordable housing projects that enhance student life and learning.

Abstract: Higher education is in trouble. Developing an effective, impactful method to evaluate institutional offerings, with the goal of streamlining the organization’s portfolio to include only viable, sustainable, and valuable programs, both academic and operational, will stave off desperation and reactive decision making in the difficult years to come.

Utilizing Dickeson’s methodology as a foundation, I’ll present a review and prioritization pathway that focuses on student centeredness and supports faculty and staff co-creation and engagement.

Abstract: Integrated planning in higher education requires a broad set of skills, knowledge, and qualities. Some of these might seem obvious (like planning knowledge). Others may be less so—particularly expertise related to “soft” skills or human skills, like communication or collaboration.

Build capacity for integrated planning more efficiently with SCUP’s Integrated Planning Competencies. This framework identifies the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for successful integrated planning across the institution. We will provide an overview of the competencies, describe how they were developed, and share insights from competency research.

Abstract: Student wellness and campus security remain a paramount issue in higher education, especially at space-constrained urban institutions that have less influence over the legibility of their campus edges. Both planning design professionals and higher education administrators are seeking to make their campuses safer and increase inclusion and belonging amongst their student communities, but are coming at those goals from different perspectives. 2022-2023 SCUP Fellow, Joel Pettigrew, conducted research that explores these differences and offers ideas for processes that center on students’ sense of security within an equitable perspective.

This webinar panel features a spectrum of professionals from these industries, offering both planning and higher education expertise to ensure student safety in urban campus edge design. The discussion will focus on how campus ecology and student development theories can inform students’ sense of security, balanced with planning principles like Crime Prevention Through Environment Design (CPTED) which guide the students’ built environment.
