Evolution of a Mall into a Future-Proofed Campus

We’ll explore how Austin Community College District transformed a declining mall into the Highland Campus, which supports student success through embracing new pedagogies, technology, and integrated programs that prepare students for the future.
Abstract: Austin Community College District (ACCD) has adapted to changing times and students’ evolving needs by using an integrated planning process, focusing on the future of education, and designing for flexibility. We’ll explore how ACCD transformed a declining mall into the Highland Campus, which supports student success through embracing new pedagogies, technology, and integrated programs that prepare students for the future. In this session, you’ll learn how you can use the Highland Campus as a successful model for planning and developing new and existing campuses that enhance student success and prepare institutions for change.

A Scalable and Accurate Non-Linear Model Projects New Distanced Space Capacities

Columbia College Chicago’s “logistic growth model,” a mathematical model that is adaptable to highly variable campus spaces, gives priority to human-centered solutions while also promoting physical and emotional well-being. It can flexibly accommodate instructors, teaching assistants, and students for different pedagogical uses and within different types of facilities.

Abstract: Campus space planning generally involves the use of linear models that apply a simple square-foot-per-person calculation to determine capacities for different room sizes. Most return-to-campus strategies following the easing of COVID-19 shelter-in-place restrictions involve modification of these models, increasing square-footage-per-person to accommodate six feet of distancing. This provides reasonable upper and lower capacity estimates, but it does not yield accurate estimates across different room sizes and room types. Columbia College Chicago has developed a non-linear model that is both scalable and accurate, resulting in estimates that match test fits across all observed spaces.

We will share how the renovation of The Ohio State University’s Biomedical and Materials Science Engineering Complex’s managed project objectives to achieve the best use of space, phased construction, budget, and sustainability goals.
Abstract: The Ohio State University (OSU) strategically planned and designed research and academic spaces for their growing College of Engineering program. This phased renovation and addition to existing laboratories within a prominent campus core provided OSU with a contextual gateway as well as essential research and academic space to support growing enrollment. We will share how the Biomedical and Materials Science Engineering Complex’s (BMEC) renovation required diligent management of project objectives to achieve the best use of space, phased construction, budget, and sustainability goals for a signature project.

Stakeholder Analysis and Engagement Toolkit

This toolkit includes recommendations and worksheets to help you analyze your stakeholders and determine how to meaningfully engage them in the planning process.
Abstract: For an integrated planning effort to succeed—particularly in higher education—collective commitment from all of the institutional stakeholders is critical.

To get that collective commitment, you need to do two things: 1) Design your planning process so it leverages your institution’s internal and external cultures, and 2) Involve your critical stakeholder groups in the planning process. Tapping into the stakeholder groups in meaningful ways will increase engagement, transparency, and commitment to the process and the products of integrated planning. Remember, institutional stakeholders are the carriers of your mission and institutional culture. Mission and culture are the key drivers of institutional success. If you do not respect your stakeholders, mission, and culture, your planning efforts will not yield a plan to enhance student success and institutional thriving.

This toolkit includes recommendations and worksheets to help you analyze your stakeholders and determine how to meaningfully engage them in the planning process.
