Site Universal Design for an Inclusive Built Environment

We will describe the tenets of universal design, show examples of how it is used on campuses, help you avoid mistakes commonly made when incorporating universal design, and outline universal design maintenance requirements.
Abstract: The university community is more diverse in age and ability than ever. We need to design built environments that acknowledge and celebrate that reality. Universal design goes well beyond barrier removal, making it an ideal framework for nurturing social and economic benefits through an inclusive built environment. We will describe the tenets of universal design, show examples of how it is used on campuses, help you avoid mistakes commonly made when incorporating universal design, and outline universal design maintenance requirements.

Transform Educational Facilities for Innovative Learning and Environmental Stewardship

We'll share recent examples of existing buildings that were transformed for new use and discuss the connection between carbon and building reuse.
Abstract: Campus planners are tasked with creating 21st century learning environments, moving towards carbon neutrality, and repairing buildings that are near the end of their useful lives. Transformative reuse addresses these issues. With creative design and programming, under-utilized campus buildings from all eras can be transformed into sustainable, thriving, innovative learning environments that align with current and future needs. We'll share recent examples of existing buildings that were transformed for new use and discuss the connection between carbon and building reuse.

Classrooms of the Future in Buildings of the Past

As the university re-evaluates undergraduate learning environments, a pilot classroom in historic Harvard Hall is the springboard for integrated planning and design processes.
Abstract: Challenges with technologies, historical spaces, and resources make it hard to provide the learning spaces new pedagogies require. Harvard University has found a creative solution to these challenges. As the university re-evaluates undergraduate learning environments, a pilot classroom in historic Harvard Hall is the springboard for integrated planning and design processes. We'll discuss our process (including how we used utilization data and stakeholder feedback during decision making), the classroom's design, and how we're using lessons learned to iterate the space.

Abstract: Yale-NUS College in Singapore developed a model of experiential learning to help students develop the the knowledge and skillset necessary to thrive in fast-paced, multicultural societies. To support this innovative educational experience that blends living and learning, a new campus was designed and built. We'll discuss Yale-NUS's unique educational model, the master planning and programming process for its new campus, and the campus's design. We'll also share lessons learned from designing the first residential and liberal arts college campus in Asia.

The Traveling Mother

Navigating, visualizing and utilizing lactation spaces in US airports

An analysis of lactation spaces in US airports, led by one of the authors of the SCUP–Penn Nursing joint study of lactation policy and facilities in higher education. Originally published by Building and Environment journal.
Abstract: Breastfeeding has well-known health, economic and social benefits. As mothers continue to work, play, learn, travel and live their lives in all environments, the need for breastfeeding spaces continues to expand. However, a key detriment to engaging in safe and private breastfeeding is the lack of dedicated lactation space. While there have been regulatory strides to support nursing mothers, businesses and employers are not required to create a permanent and dedicated space for breastfeeding mothers. Little research has examined the essential building specifications of these spaces.

Airports are one of many environments that have been overlooked for requiring a lactation space. A total of 130 US airports, categorized by hub size and region, were analyzed for the following features: website source, photos, amenities description, and location/access. Findings conclude that while many airports are addressing the issue of mothers and breastfeeding, more could be done to provide quality accommodations.

Using Alumni Surveys to Assess the Impacts of Active Learning Spaces on Development of Collaboration Skills

This is a SCUP Fellow Research Project Final Report for the 2018–2019 program. The goal of this research was to evaluate the gains, if any, in the collaboration skill development of students who experienced part of their undergraduate or graduate learning within active learning spaces at Thomas Jefferson University, and to attempt to pinpoint the factors contributing to that.
Abstract: There is a growing interest in examining the relationship between active learning spaces and development of soft skills. The overall goal of this research was to evaluate the gains, if any, in the collaboration skill development of students who experienced part of their undergraduate or graduate learning within active learning spaces at Thomas Jefferson University, and to attempt to pinpoint the factors contributing to that.

To meet the goal, the researcher designed a study to assess perceived impact of use of active learning spaces, targeting alumni. Although many such studies rely on reflections from current students during or shortly after their use of learning spaces, the unique contribution of this research is that it gathered impact perceptions of learning spaces from persons after they experienced collaborative work activities in their career settings beyond academia.

Speed, Efficiency, and Consensus Through the Collaborative Process

Come learn from our unique approach in which actual users participate in designing an outpatient center on the Nebraska Medical Campus, allowing implementation of new processes and efficiencies known only to medical center staff.
Abstract: A collaborative approach allows building projects to open faster, reduces redesign, increases staff satisfaction, and produces a higher utilization rate than the traditional design process. This session details the collaborative Lean process involving over 100 people that allowed the Lauritzen Outpatient Center on the Nebraska Medical Campus to be completed 1.5 years early with few design changes. Come learn from our unique approach in which actual users participate in designing the facility, allowing implementation of new processes and efficiencies known only to medical center staff.

Planning Adaptable Spaces for a Growing Campus Community

We will share how the renovation of The Ohio State University’s Biomedical and Materials Science Engineering Complex’s managed project objectives to achieve the best use of space, phased construction, budget, and sustainability goals.
Abstract: The Ohio State University (OSU) strategically planned and designed research and academic spaces for their growing College of Engineering program. This phased renovation and addition to existing laboratories within a prominent campus core provided OSU with a contextual gateway as well as essential research and academic space to support growing enrollment. We will share how the Biomedical and Materials Science Engineering Complex’s (BMEC) renovation required diligent management of project objectives to achieve the best use of space, phased construction, budget, and sustainability goals for a signature project.
