Abstract: Preparing for the road ahead in education is far from easy. In this presentation, we’ll explore why. For example, we have rowdy revolutions in the tools of teaching and learning, including the expanding use of mobile technology, assessment tools, gaming systems, augmented reality, virtual reality, and more; in large-scale student success initiatives, including advising reforms, accelerated learning labs, and pathways programs; and in the use of advanced analytics to move from a culture of reporting to a culture of care. We’ll also unpack how leaders can leverage integrated planning to get ready for and make the most of the compelling revolutions at hand.

Abstract: Zero net energy (ZNE) is a formidable goal and one that is not easily grafted onto a project once the design is in progress. We will explain why it is necessary to evaluate ZNE opportunities before the request for proposal. This session outlines a process for leveraging energy modeling early to gauge and clarify ZNE feasibility and articulating the value proposition of high-performance design leadership. Come learn how to set meaningful energy targets, identify crucial design decisions, and demonstrate to stakeholders that setting ZNE goals is vital during procurement.

Abstract: In an effort to address ambitious campus sustainability goals, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) creatively balanced physical campus growth and renewal with a policy prohibiting new square footage. The results continue to exceed expectations. The master planning process can help the university achieve sustainability in the face of shrinking resources, all while developing a physical environment that fosters student learning and wellbeing. We will share our insights on leveraging the planning process to spur institutional change in financial, procurement, and planning matters.

Abstract: We will explore how The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) campus master plan will guide significant growth in research, enrollment, and partnership opportunities across multiple campuses and industry over the coming decades. UTSA is the largest public institution in the fastest-growing large city in the country. It is important that built environments responsibly utilize natural and financial resources as well as meet expectations for student and community wellbeing. Sustainability and green building experts will discuss critical lessons and tools they used to integrate sustainability at the University of Houston, allowing them to manage both long- and short-term decision making. Abstract: FLEXSpace—The Flexible Learning Environments eXchange—and the Learning Space Rating System (LSRS) are tools that can help you plan, design, assess, and improve learning spaces on your campus. In this session, you will learn about the newly released FLEXspace 2.0 along with the LSRS. We'll cover the features and benefits of both tools and how they can be incorporated into the planning process. Come learn how to use these tools to inform designs and support end users from planning through post occupancy.

Abstract: Universities need to plan for rapid change physically, fiscally, and curricularly. In this session, we will explore the Campus 2050 survey results and share how 10 institutions are planning and adapting their campuses and built environment for economic, social, and operational changes over the next 30 years. You will learn strategies for mobilizing campus planning efforts at a faster pace and how to initiate, replicate, and improve upon current future-proofing strategies.

Abstract: A sharp, perhaps permanent contraction in the pool of college-aged students has become inescapable. Nearly all institutions could confront wrenching losses in competitiveness, revenue, or both. Yet despite advance warning, few institutions understand what they must do now to remain viable. We will go over two sets of tools that are critical for preparing for the upcoming demographic changes: 1) conducting analyses of institutional vulnerability; and 2) modeling what-if scenarios to shape strategy.
