Planning Housing for International Students

A Case Study from Oregon State University

A deliberate, metrics-based planning process can make all the difference in achieving strategic goals related to increasing international student enrollment.

Abstract: This article uses the planning process for the International Living-Learning Center (ILLC) at Oregon State University (OSU) to describe how the needs of international students are being served through residential living-learning communities. The number of international students enrolled in the United States has increased 43 percent over the past decade to a record high of over 800,000 students. Colleges and universities across the country are recruiting international students, but for these efforts to be successful, postsecondary institutions must support the students as they navigate a new cultural landscape. OSU and INTO University Partnerships (IUP), a private company from the United Kingdom that partners with higher education institutions, decided to plan for the students’ success by creating specialized housing facilities, both physically and with specialized residential programming. By examining the integrated planning process for the unique services this facility offers, this article will help postsecondary institutions plan for facilities and programs catering to international students on their own campuses.

Positioning Liberal Arts Campuses to Participate in Regional Economic Development

A Primer

Almost every college has some kind of catalytic role to play in its regional economy.

Abstract: Until very recently, the idea of higher education as an economic catalyst has focused almost exclusively on land-grant colleges and research universities. In little more than a decade, the perceived economic development role of higher education has expanded from a narrow field of large elite research institutions to include small liberal arts colleges, many of which traditionally saw their role as a refuge from economic forces rather than as an active creator of them. Liberal arts colleges, and, in particular, public liberal arts colleges, now confront an entirely new set of expectations from the regions in which they are located.
Almost every college has some kind of catalytic role to play in its regional economy. However, in order to be accepted as an effective partner, a college’s economic development responses must be perceived as credible by the larger community, and in order to sustain campus support, they must be seen to add real value to the institution itself. This article provides an overview of the key issues that a liberal arts campus must address as it prepares to enter the economic development arena.

A Transformational Gallery for Ryerson University’s Architecture School

Ryerson University needed a gallery to exhibit work and host lectures and events. What it got was much more than that, proving that even the smallest project can be transformative.

Abstract: The Department of Architectural Science at Toronto’s Ryerson University was already committed to community engagement. However, the need for a permanent gallery provided a new catalyst. The collaborative nature of the integrated planning process provided the school with an opportunity to revisit its public programming mandate. The school’s transformation through the innovative physical positioning and use of the gallery deepens its dialogue and level of engagement both within the university and with the greater community.

Developing Research Methods for Analyzing Learning Spaces That Can Inform Institutional Missions of Learning and Engagement

This research report explores the value of applying social science approaches to learning space design, toward understanding how students’s perceptions of campus space affect their learning experience.
Abstract: This report was produced by the research team awarded the M. Perry Chapman Prize for 2013–2014.

As the recipients of the 2012–2013 Perry Chapman Prize show in their report, Research on Learning Design: Present State, Future Directions, the study of learning spaces in tertiary education is an emerging field in which the key issues are to “establish a body of knowledge that will guide the design, remodel, and use of new and existing learning spaces” and “evaluate these learning spaces by developing research to determine whether and how they fulfill their purposes.”

This report aims to produce complementary work by addressing the larger context of the university campus and students’ perceptions and experiences of their learning at the tertiary level more generally. Rather than starting from environmental psychology or behaviorist models, it explores the value of applying contemporary approaches from the social sciences to learning space design, an approach increasingly being developed. This, however, is not just a matter of applying a different research method; it also concerns the underlying problem of how we conceptualize relationships between material space and its occupation both generally and specifically in relationship to learning. In fact, over the last few years, theorists across many disciplines that deal with material space—such as geography, anthropology, and science and technology studies—have been critically examining precisely this issue of rethinking how to conceptualize the interrelationships between space, people, artifacts, and activities.

Working with data-based performance metrics aids employees—and even students— in decision-making to evaluate options that affect performance thereby influencing the outcome. This session provides insight into KSU’s approach on engagement across the university.

Advancing Student-Centered Learning at Purdue University

Discussion will focus on the changing expectations for librarians, especially as instructional partners, the redesigning of library learning spaces to support instructional innovation, and elements necessary for developing a faculty learning community focused on enhancing student-centered learning.
Abstract: The mission of Instruction Matters Purdue Academic Course Transformation (IMPACT) is to redesign foundational courses using student-centered learning as a basis. The libraries' advancement of this campus-wide change will be discussed from three perspectives—administrative, space planning, and curriculum redesign. Discussion will focus on the changing expectations for librarians, especially as instructional partners, the redesigning of library learning spaces to support instructional innovation, and elements necessary for developing a faculty learning community focused on enhancing student-centered learning.

Integrating E-Learning to Improve Learning Outcomes

A proven way for teachers to engage students and improve learning outcomes is through the appropriate use of e-learning and Web 2.0 tools in teaching.

Abstract: Learning happens best when students are engaged with the topic and productive participation is at its highest. The challenge in education is how to reach students at each level of development to increase motivation and intention. Instruction must be culturally responsive to support the achievement of a diverse population using a framework that meets the appropriate level of learning for each student in the affective, cognitive, and psychomotor domains in order to inspire creativity and innovation. In teaching in the medical field, the faculty is faced with the same challenges, since the theories taught in medical education are difficult for students to grasp. There are fewer designated methods for medical education than for general education, leading many educators to fall back on standard lectures. However, traditional lecture materials and class-time methods fail to meet the learning needs of all students. A proven way for teachers to engage students and improve learning outcomes is through the relevant use of e-learning and Web 2.0 tools in teaching. The literature supports the case for integrating e-learning and Web 2.0 technologies into medical education to improve learning outcomes.

Organizational Change in Health Sciences

The Idaho State University Experience

The reorganization at ISU that led to the establishment of the Division of Health Sciences remains a significant experiment in organizational change.

Abstract: During the 2009–10 academic year, Idaho State University embarked on a university-wide structural reorganization. This article describes the change process leading to the creation and development of the Division of Health Sciences, using John P. Kotter’s “8-Step Process for Leading Change” as the framework for analysis. The authors conclude that while the reorganization process generated controversy, it continues to be a work in progress and has resulted in noticeable benefits for the division.
