Using SCUPs Campus Facilities Inventory (CFI) to Inform Your Integrated Planning

In this session, we will explore some of the findings from the 2021 CFI benchmarking and hear from a panel of institutions about changes they are making and using CFI data to inform their planning efforts.
Abstract: As colleges and universities plan for the future, they now confront unprecedented technological, demographic, social, and economic change. So, SCUP created the next generation of its Campus Facilities Inventory (CFI) to help leaders see how their campus compares to national benchmarks and understand how things might change in the future. In this session, we will explore some of the findings from the 2021 CFI benchmarking and hear from a panel of institutions about changes they are making and using CFI data to inform their planning efforts.

SCUP Fellow Presentation | Naming Issues on Campus

An Integrated Planning Approach

In this session, we’ll describe the trends, challenges, and opportunities related to re-naming and de-naming on campus.
Abstract: From 2015–2018, amidst a period of heightened activism on campuses and broader societal change, institutions of higher education renamed and de-named campus buildings with namesakes whose legacies were seen to conflict with institutional missions and community values and harmful to members of the campus and surrounding communities. In 2020, the push for addressing problematic namesakes has grown exponentially, expanding beyond buildings and postsecondary education. Effectively managing naming issues on campus and the expectations and interests of internal and external stakeholder groups is challenging, emotional, and time consuming work that has a lasting impact on the physical campus as well as, institutional legacy. We’ll describe the trends, challenges, and opportunities related to re-naming and de-naming on campus.

Abstract: In turbulent times, visionary leaders and their committed crews recognize the winds of change, reset their sails and change course so they emerge in a better position than before. The global pandemic of 2020-21 has been a once-in-a-century disruption for education at all levels, which has magnified pre-existing inequities and vulnerabilities, and compressed a decade’s worth of social and technological change into a year. Even once this threat has past, many of our campuses will see recurrent disruptions from extreme weather events, other zoonotic viruses, geopolitical conflict, wildfires or flooding. We know now that business and academic continuity will demand flexible, lower density approaches and an integrated, omnichannel approach to student services, scholarship and learning. The 2021 Campus Facilities Inventory (CFI) report’s valuable facilities benchmarking data will help college and university leaders understand not only what they have now and how it compares, but also how things might change in the future.
Abstract: As leaders of colleges and universities continue to analyze changes today and plan for the future, the knowledge and insight from the SCUP community is critical. The 2021 Campus Facilities Inventory (CFI) report’s valuable facilities benchmarking data will help college and university leaders understand not only what they have now and how it compares, but also how things might change in the future.

The CFI report consists of three sections that provide a holistic picture of today—while enabling institutions to crowd-source a vision for the future: Current space use data, anticipated changes to space, and qualitative space changes.

Data are reported only in aggregate, protecting the privacy of each institution. Reporting focuses on findings and comparison tables by institution type (i.e., four-year public, four-year private, and two-year public), location (i.e., urban, suburban, rural), and size (i.e., enrollment, ­ 20,000).

This realization has been growing in awareness but is accelerated by a national pandemic. College planning has taken on a new meaning as variables of change. It encompasses and requires a recognition that there is a systemic confluence of forces that encompass infrastructure, technology, people, and social justice. Without continuous adaptation and thinking smarter, quicker, and more innovatively, an effective college will fail to integrate the dynamics of accelerated change, as they affect each institution's policies, people, finances and student success outcomes. Abstract: The division of Academic Affairs at the University of West Georgia became involved with the Society for College and University Planning and integrated planning over four years ago. The result was slowly integrating academic planning with facilities, accreditation, budget, student affairs, and student success. Just as Thomas Edison was probably not thinking about integrated planning when he was quoted on planning, we had no idea how fruitful our efforts would become. We enhanced and assessed student scheduling, learning spaces, faculty support, and student success and support services in a meaningful way that resulted in positive and measurable outcomes for improving learning and reducing costs.
