Building the Capacity for Planning: The Integrated Planning Competencies

Integrated planning in higher education requires a broad set of skills, knowledge, and qualities. Some of these might seem obvious (like planning knowledge).
Abstract: Integrated planning in higher education requires a broad set of skills, knowledge, and qualities. Some of these might seem obvious (like planning knowledge). Others may be less so—particularly expertise related to “soft” skills or human skills, like communication or collaboration. Build capacity for integrated planning more efficiently with SCUP’s Integrated Planning Competencies. This framework identifies the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary for successful integrated planning across the institution. We will provide an overview of the competencies, describe how they were developed, and share insights from competency research. Whatever planning activities you’re involved in—whether you’re responsible for planning across your institution, coordinating your institution’s next strategic plan, implementing your campus master plan, working within your department to improve student success, etc.—an integrated planning approach is key. Join us and demystify the skills, knowledge, and dispositions you need to get there.

Student wellness and campus security remain a paramount issue in higher education, especially at space-constrained urban institutions that have less influence over the legibility of their campus edges. Both planning design professionals and higher education administrators are seeking to make their campuses safer and increase inclusion and belonging amongst their student communities, but are coming at those goals from different perspectives.
Abstract: Student wellness and campus security remain a paramount issue in higher education, especially at space-constrained urban institutions that have less influence over the legibility of their campus edges. Both planning design professionals and higher education administrators are seeking to make their campuses safer and increase inclusion and belonging amongst their student communities, but are coming at those goals from different perspectives. 2022-2023 SCUP Fellow, Joel Pettigrew, conducted research that explores these differences and offers ideas for processes that center on students’ sense of security within an equitable perspective. This webinar panel features a spectrum of professionals from these industries, offering both planning and higher education expertise to ensure student safety in urban campus edge design. The discussion will focus on how campus ecology and student development theories can inform students’ sense of security, balanced with planning principles like Crime Prevention Through Environment Design (CPTED) which guide the students’ built environment.

Since Ohio University's (OU) Clippinger Laboratory was built in 1967 higher education has changed dramatically: scientific research, instruction, and the students themselves.
Abstract: Since Ohio University's (OU) Clippinger Laboratory was built in 1967 higher education has changed dramatically: scientific research, instruction, and the students themselves. Through several examples over the 10-year period of Clippinger's reimagining, this session will examine a process for rethinking a building's vision, developing space needs, and responding to changing times so that the building can continue to serve the College of Arts and Sciences into the future. Come learn a set of adaptive reuse tools to guide planning and design, including alignment of program and capacity, compliance with regulations, and achieving sustainability and environmental goals.
