Abstract: When properly planned in collaboration with municipal agencies, campus green infrastructure strategies promote resilience, sustainability, and livability as well as optimize campus stormwater management and drainage performance. Although unique in their practice and infrastructure challenges, Loyola University Chicago and Loyola University Medical Center used strategic partnerships, innovative planning solutions, and green infrastructure to create resilient, livable campuses. Impact Student Success Using the Three-Box Solution

With sweeping shifts in recruitment and retention of students throughout higher education, Northern Kentucky University committed to a pivot. Its new student framework emphasizes student support and academic delivery driven by strategic decisions and data rather than by impulsivity. Their Success by Design framework encouraged innovations that focused the university on meeting learners where they were.

Abstract: Northern Kentucky University (NKU) used an expedited and focused strategic planning process by applying Govindarajan’s (2016) Three-Box Solution to simultaneously manage the past, present, and future. A Core Team, supported by multiple resource teams consisting of representatives from all NKU constituencies, gathered input from nearly 2,000 stakeholders. The resulting Success by Design strategic framework concentrated solely on student success. This article describes the ongoing, iterative approach and offers recommendations for those seeking to develop widespread buy-in and unleash the innovative spirit needed to make their institutions more student-ready.

Fostering Innovation on Ohio’s Co-Located Campuses Through Collaborative Planning

This is a SCUP Fellow Research Project Final Report for the 2018–2019 program. This research project investigates whether co-located institutions, specifically, and competing institutions of higher education, more generally, could use the concept of “collaborative planning” to achieve mutual success.
Abstract: This research project investigates whether co-located institutions, specifically, and competing institutions of higher education, more generally, could use the concept of “collaborative planning” to achieve mutual success. Collaborative planning is a conceptual framework from urban planning that emphasizes “partnership,stakeholder involvement, collaboration, and consensus-oriented decision-making” as core principles of planning (Vandenbussche, Edelenbos, and Eshuis 2017). It is an effective tool for transcending competition, negotiating disagreements, and achieving increased institutional collaboration and innovation.
