Abstract: Medical student and resident education greatly benefits from immersive on-the-job training that integrates research and treatment. In this session, we will show how a successful design process integrates an academic medical center with a private hospital campus (including a Level 1 trauma center), simultaneously advancing education for students and improving patient outcomes. We will share tools and strategies with you for integrating different learning spaces and cultures to create a comprehensive approach to education and patient care.

Abstract: Come dive into the world of e-scooters and other micro-mobility options, which are on the rise nationwide. We will discuss current micro-mobility trends, benefits, challenges, and ways that planners can integrate micro-mobility safely, aesthetically, and strategically into their campus environments. With foresight and planning, micro-mobility can fill gaps in traditional campus transportation modes while mitigating challenges such as rider injury, pedestrian safety, and unsightliness. You will learn about micro-mobility trends, strategies, and policies you can apply and adapt to your campus infrastructure and reap their benefits.

Abstract: Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) and biophilic design principles may often seem at odds, but great ideas for integrating security and wellness for your facilities may come from unexpected sources...as long as you engage users early on in planning and design. Illustrating the latest security, wellness, and biophilic design integration strategies, this session will provide you with essential tools for evaluating both prospective designs and existing conditions on your campus.

Abstract: Timely stakeholder input is vital to a master plan's integrity—in particular, input about the needs of academic programs. In this session, we will share how the Mid-Plains Community College engaged in a collaborative process across the campus and community to integrate the facility and academic master plans. Come learn how an integrated approach to stakeholder input can lead to success on your campus.

Abstract: Swarthmore College’s leadership shares insight into how the college’s newest addition, Maxine Frank Singer ‘72 Hall, decided to create a collaborative environment by combining three academic departments—Biology, Engineering, and Psychology. Each floor combines functional areas for teaching, research, and learning. The unique common space, both indoor and out in the adjacent gardens will foster connections with nearby academic programs and enrich the mission of The Scott Arboretum.

Abstract: For an integrated planning effort to succeed—particularly in higher education—collective commitment from all of the institutional stakeholders is critical.

To get that collective commitment, you need to do two things: 1) Design your planning process so it leverages your institution’s internal and external cultures, and 2) Involve your critical stakeholder groups in the planning process. Tapping into the stakeholder groups in meaningful ways will increase engagement, transparency, and commitment to the process and the products of integrated planning. Remember, institutional stakeholders are the carriers of your mission and institutional culture. Mission and culture are the key drivers of institutional success. If you do not respect your stakeholders, mission, and culture, your planning efforts will not yield a plan to enhance student success and institutional thriving.

This toolkit includes recommendations and worksheets to help you analyze your stakeholders and determine how to meaningfully engage them in the planning process.

Abstract: Institutions have determined through surveys and research that building design and location significantly affect first-year student's happiness and academic success. In response, they are implementing significant changes to on-campus housing. Understanding how different housing models influence first-year students allows institutions to provide students with a strong social foundation that can significantly affect recruitment and retention. We will share examples of rapidly changing student expectations and prepare you to assess your student housing offerings and evaluate their relationships to student success.

Abstract: During onboarding, it is critical that we provide a level of service that assesses each student's needs and customizes services to those needs. We will share new ideas to improve the student onboarding process and its impact on the organization, staffing, and use of existing (or new) student services space. Using Northwest Florida State College (NFSC) as a case study, you will learn about current trends in student needs and discuss how these trends drove change in NFSC's workflows, staff, space, furniture, and technology.
