Adapting to COVID-19: Evolving Campus Spaces and University Partnerships

This virtual tour will explore formal learning spaces, the social spaces that connect them, the outdoor built environment, and the COVID-19 response strategies implemented to fulfill the academic and research mission of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) while protecting the health and safety of the university community.
Abstract: Like many universities, the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) has responded to the COVID-19 pandemic by modifying the function and occupation of campus physical spaces. This virtual tour will explore formal learning spaces, the social spaces that connect them, the outdoor built environment, and the COVID-19 response strategies implemented to fulfill the academic and research mission of UIC while protecting the health and safety of the university community. Come learn how partnerships between university planners, architects, facilities management, grounds staff, public health experts, and medical experts have formed to prepare for the safe return to campus spaces.

Abstract: Austin Community College District (ACCD) has adapted to changing times and students’ evolving needs by using an integrated planning process, focusing on the future of education, and designing for flexibility. We’ll explore how ACCD transformed a declining mall into the Highland Campus, which supports student success through embracing new pedagogies, technology, and integrated programs that prepare students for the future. In this session, you’ll learn how you can use the Highland Campus as a successful model for planning and developing new and existing campuses that enhance student success and prepare institutions for change.

By moving these programs and resources from relatively isolated campuses into an existing ecosystem, university leaders are signaling the urban campus’s value in both attracting the right talent and supercharging their research capabilities. These projects, if successful, create and solidify a beneficial relationship between the campus and local industries and communities. Universities can leverage public-private partnerships to expand beyond the boundaries of the campus to relieve space constraints as well as facilitate collaboration with allied institutions.
Abstract: Many universities struggle to meet space demands when they expand their programs near allied institutions. Public-private partnerships can solve this challenge while helping to strengthen industry and institutional partnerships. Universities can leverage public-private partnerships to expand beyond the boundaries of the campus to relieve space constraints as well as facilitate collaboration with allied institutions. Space demands are significant challenges that need to be addressed and this session will show you an alternative approach to alleviating space needs.

Compare Approaches for Construction and Delivery

Come learn from campus facilities planning and student affairs officials, who will address the pros and cons of different delivery methods (P3, purchase/renovation, and conventional construction) from the perspective of up-front costs, operating and maintenance factors, student experience, and functionality.
Abstract: On-campus living has been linked to student success and is a key factor in admissions decisions. As campuses look to expand and improve their housing inventories in a challenging fiscal environment, there are more options than ever available. One institution will share its recent experiences with several of these options. The University of Massachusetts (UMass) Lowell has more than doubled its on-campus housing inventory in the past five years using a combination of P3, real estate acquisitions, and conventional construction. This session will compare the relative benefits and particular challenges in utilizing these types of housing delivery methods.
