Abstract: Long-range master plans make assumptions about the future, but historic data is actually a more reliable predictor. A master plan built on data, not assumptions, is also easier to adapt to changes. We will discuss a computational metrics mobile app and how Miami University uses it for its master plan. With practical tools and processes in hand, you will be able to prioritize available data, make more informed planning decisions, and align your team before executing future planning priorities on your campus.

Abstract: To be fully residential without adding campus buildings, Lawrence University successfully prototyped new group housing typologies in under-utilized residential building space across campus. This session will describe how an innovative typology for students’ small-group living transformed and expanded group living options in surprising, incongruous campus spaces. You will learn how the expanded project team, tasked with thinking outside of the box, invented a new housing typology uniquely connected to the existing campus culture and site.

Abstract: Institutions have determined through surveys and research that building design and location significantly affect first-year student's happiness and academic success. In response, they are implementing significant changes to on-campus housing. Understanding how different housing models influence first-year students allows institutions to provide students with a strong social foundation that can significantly affect recruitment and retention. We will share examples of rapidly changing student expectations and prepare you to assess your student housing offerings and evaluate their relationships to student success.

Abstract: Higher education's nearly maxed-out debt capacity, decreasing state funding, and shrinking enrollment reduce revenues while facilities-related costs rise. Let's discuss how capital improvement, partnering, and financing strategies can change course. This session will frame universities' capital planning, operations, and maintenance challenges as a systemic fiscal issue. We will present holistic solutions and review strategies currently considered by universities to address and correct the situation.

Abstract: FLEXSpace—The Flexible Learning Environments eXchange—and the Learning Space Rating System (LSRS) are tools that can help you plan, design, assess, and improve learning spaces on your campus. In this session, you will learn about the newly released FLEXspace 2.0 along with the LSRS. We'll cover the features and benefits of both tools and how they can be incorporated into the planning process. Come learn how to use these tools to inform designs and support end users from planning through post occupancy.

Abstract: Applying design thinking to strategic and academic plan development can help identify innovative priorities and create a sense of ownership at the individual level, establishing buy-in through the planning process. In this session, we'll explore how a regional comprehensive university incorporated design thinking throughout the development of its strategic and academic plans. Come learn how to employ design thinking to actively engage diverse stakeholders in the planning process, creating alignment and laying the groundwork for an integrated approach to implementation.

Abstract: Innovation centers, maker spaces, incubators, and idea factories get a lot of buzz, but what are they really and how can they be designed most effectively? This session is all about these innovation buildings—their design, use, and operations. We'll explore strategies and best practices, then roll up our sleeves and start designing! After we review the range of innovation buildings universities are creating, you will be asked to tackle a specific case study design problem within a small group.

Abstract: Higher education’s resource situation is not good and is not expected to get better in the foreseeable future. Elite and wealthy institutions are relatively immune to these pressures, but the overwhelming majority of other institutions are continually struggling to match resources to mission. Several actions, though difficult and painful, would help reduce the gap between available resources and those needed to meet stakeholders’ needs. This session focuses on the need to employ a coordinated and aligned approach to planning, resource allocation, and assessment. It goes on to describe a proven practice for utilizing all three to match resources to mission—strategic resource allocation. Finally, it offers suggestions for initiating the conversation on your campus.
