Campus Heritage Preservation Plan

Private Baccalaureate College (Louisiana, United States)

The historically Black institution used a Getty Campus Heritage grant to assemble detailed documentation on their historic buildings and landscape, which will serve as the basis for future rehabilitation projects.
Abstract:

A historically Black private college chartered in 1930, Dillard University occupies a unified, axially designed campus in the Beaux Arts tradition. The ten white brick buildings that comprise the historic campus surround a large open quadrangle delineated by two long rows of live oak trees, the Avenue of the Oaks. A grant will allow the university to assemble detailed documentation on their historic buildings and landscape, which will serve as the basis for future rehabilitation projects.

Campus Heritage Preservation Plan

Private Baccalaureate College (Georgia, United States)

The Campus Heritage grant allowed this historically Black institution to complete a campus preservation plan and, ultimately, to apply for National Historic Landmark Status.
Abstract: Spelman College, founded in 1881, is renowned for its long history of providing quality education for African American women to prepare them for leadership roles. The college campus consists of more than thirty-two acres and twenty-five buildings on the west side of Atlanta. Spelman's campus houses eleven buildings completed before 1927, several of which are included in the National Register of Historic Places designation Spelman shares with neighboring colleges. It is one of five institutions that make up the Atlanta University Center (AUC), the largest consortium of higher educational facilities for Black students in the world with a total population of 16,000 students. The Campus Heritage grant allowed Spelman to complete a campus preservation plan and, ultimately, to apply for National Historic Landmark Status.

Reinvigorating a Campus Landmark

Transforming Stirling’s Museum

Beginning with the project's conception and taking you through its planning, design, and construction, we will outline our investigation, historic research, and analysis of Harvard University's Stirling-designed postmodern museum to inform its transformation into a vibrant academic building housing a variety of programs.
Abstract: All colleges and universities have existing building stock that they need to repurpose in order to fit contemporary campus paradigms. Beginning with the project's conception and taking you through its planning, design, and construction, we will outline our investigation, historic research, and analysis of Harvard University's Stirling-designed postmodern museum to inform its transformation into a vibrant academic building housing a variety of programs. In this session, we'll establish a strategic and creative framework for adaptive reuse that you can use to reposition historic and architecturally-significant buildings on your campus.

Isttaniokaksini / Science Commons

University of Lethbridge Virtual Tour

Isttaniokaksini—the Blackfoot name bestowed on the new Science Commons for transdisciplinary science at the University of Lethbridge—means deep knowledge and awareness growing out of the unknown. Planned for many generations into the future, the design creates a highly sustainable, flexible, and supportive platform for discovering solutions to the challenges facing humanity, nature, and the universe.
Abstract: Isttaniokaksini—the Blackfoot name bestowed on the new Science Commons for transdisciplinary science at the University of Lethbridge—means deep knowledge and awareness growing out of the unknown. The new 32,600 SM collaborative science facility is sited in the iconic coulee landscape adjacent to University Hall, one of noted Canadian architect Arthur Erickson’s most iconic works. The architecture of Isttaniokaksini / Science Commons realizes the vision to create the most advanced science building in Canada and an incubator for transdisciplinary discovery. Planned for many generations into the future, the design creates a highly sustainable, flexible, and supportive platform for discovering solutions to the challenges facing humanity, nature, and the universe.

Abstract: Join us for a virtual tour of Wentworth Institute’s newest academic building, the Center for Engineering, Innovation & Sciences (CEIS).

The project team members from upper administration, faculty, the City of Boston, and the architect discuss key priorities ranging from academic and social to campus and the wider city and community, which led to the ground-breaking design. The building opened for classes just over a year before the pandemic hit and the presenters will discuss how the building use shifted to remote and hybrid learning as well as plans going forward.

Smart Building Smart Campus

2019–2020 SCUP Fellow Angela Foss—Research Presentation

The research project by SCUP Fellow Angie Foss was to explore the opportunities to bring online learners virtually into Southern New Hampshire University’s new, state-of-the-art Innovation and Design Education building for their College of Engineering, Technology, and Aeronautics. Her research included the development of two modes of delivery—remote labs and augmented reality/virtual interactions—and she also discusses the impact to the project by the immediate shift to all-remote learning due to COVID-19.
Abstract: SNHU recently built a state-of-the-art engineering facility called the Innovation and Design Education building (IDE), for their College of Engineering, Technology, and Aeronautics (CETA).

Using Metrics to Maximize the UW-Platteville Engineering Facility

We’ll discuss how we leveraged metrics and space utilization studies to achieve a unifying one-building solution for all engineering programs at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville rather than the original master plan vision for three buildings.
Abstract: Through the use of real-time data, institutions can overcome budgetary constraints for capital projects by maximizing space utilization through shared resource planning and optimization. We’ll discuss how we leveraged metrics and space utilization studies to achieve a unifying one-building solution for all engineering programs at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville rather than the original master plan vision for three buildings. Come learn how data-informed decision making can help you lead a collaborative planning process at your institution to develop multidisciplinary solutions that overcome limited capital dollars.

Cleveland State University Campus Tour

The Washkewicz College of Engineering added over 100,000 GSF (gross square feet) to the existing 200,000 GSF building—completed in 2018—on the campus edge in downtown Cleveland.

Resource includes handout download only; unfortunately, we weren't able to successfully record video from this tour.

Abstract: The Washkewicz College of Engineering added over 100,000 GSF (gross square feet) to the existing 200,000 GSF building, completed in 2018. The building has become an icon for the college with its modern lab and teaching spaces, and serves as campus entrance marker in downtown Cleveland.
