Abstract: 2019 presents a changing landscape as concerns mount over environmental decline, increasing atmospheric carbon, and competition for resources. Across field after field, research demonstrates the impact of the built environment on climate change and the essential role retooling the built environment must play in addressing it. Globally, a massive reallocation of resources has begun as nations commit to addressing climate change and the social and economic equity challenges confronting our increasingly crowded planet.

To achieve Paris Agreement targets and advance the New Urban Agenda adopted at Habitat III, architects, planners, and owners must fundamentally transform how buildings are designed, constructed, and operated. Creative and courageous people are forging new pathways full of promise and hope.

Institutions of higher learning have always been laboratories for testing new approaches at multiple scales—building, campus, and institutional. This keynote will articulate the compelling 21st century challenges and opportunities for the design and planning fields in higher education.

Abstract: This session will explore in-depth case studies of two interdisciplinary centers for STEM learning, innovation, and entrepreneurship, one at a leading liberal arts college (Washington and Lee University), and the other at a large research university (Virginia Commonwealth University). Leaders involved in the planning, design, operation, and evolution of two successful STEM and innovation centers will share the most impactful decisions affecting the long-term success of their work, including how location, governance, funding, programming, and promotion influence dynamic interdisciplinary results.

Abstract: Through cross-disciplinary collaboration, Pennovation Works at the University of Pennsylvania has become a successful place for entrepreneurship in the 21st century. The Philadelphia campus unites research and private venture in a central innovation incubator and generates a diverse community, new economy, and enhanced visibility for its institution. We will reveal our methodology for how institutions can generate new economies, define an innovation campus identity, and utilize brownfields. Come learn how integrated design of collaborative space can inform a non-traditional innovation campus.

Abstract: Allied health facilities are evolving into active, problem-based learning laboratories. High fidelity manikins, sophisticated equipment, augmented reality, virtual anatomy, innovation labs, and community clinics are transforming medical education spaces. This session will explore current and emerging approaches for medical teaching environments that enhance learning outcomes as well as inventive ways of leveraging building infrastructure for maximum functionality. You will learn about current modalities and how they are shaping allied health facilities in different case studies along with challenges and opportunities associated with new and renovated facilities.

Abstract: Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) started an engineering program when they purchased Daniel Webster College and inherited a strong aeronautics program, students, and faculty looking for a new educational home. SNHU, well-known for online education programs, continues to develop its traditional campus through its new College of Engineering, Technology and Aeronautics, which they planned to accommodate multiple modalities reflecting 2019 and beyond as well as exemplify academic rigor. We will demonstrate how SNHU benchmarked engineering schools, helping SNHU envision their idea for a new school and identify state-of-the-art learning environments.

Abstract: In this session, we will discuss a process that any campus can use for creating a place for students to generate ideas and solve problems such as researching needs, crafting vision, planning spaces and services, piloting programs, and designing spaces. You will learn how to identify student needs; make a case for purposeful programming, services, and space that support innovation and problem-solving; and possess greater comfort with risk-taking and ambiguity as well as deliver mission-critical activities.

Abstract: Pedagogies, study needs, and socialization habits are changing as student bodies become more diverse. Planners and architects must respond with new, more responsive spaces to create successful facilities. In this session, we will focus on both in-depth and high-level overviews of four new projects and how they specifically address STEM students' evolving space needs, including needs particular to first-generation and underrepresented minority students. Find out what's working at Amherst College’s newly opened Science Center and discover innovative designs for types and configurations of learning spaces at several new undergraduate STEM facilities.

Abstract: Colleges and universities—especially those in urban areas—are often landlocked by their campus boundaries. Binghamton University has become a catalyst for transforming and revitalizing an economically-challenged community while maintaining its historical footprint. Come learn how to grow your academic programs and campus while assisting the community and putting students closer to employers. We will share our ideas for expanding your campus footprint and repurposing existing buildings to directly impact the surrounding community.

Abstract: Wellesley College enabled the revitalization of their largest academic building, the science center, by transforming the way people thought about temporary classrooms—from "breaking bad" to breaking norms. We will demonstrate how advances in modular building delivery are being applied to sophisticated buildings (including BL2 and vivarium) such that users perceive them as an improvement to the current condition. Come learn how to be better a problem-solver and be able to detect flaws-in-thinking before they become flaws-in-doing.

Abstract: Enrollment management is a term used in higher education to describe a wide range of issues, including recruitment, admissions, financial aid, student success, and more. To be successful, institutions must break with past practices and reconstitute organizational structures that are expandable. Using Kotter’s change management model as a guide, California State University Los Angeles LA’s addressed maximizing classroom capacity to meet enrollment demand following quarter to semester conversion and significant enrollment increases.
