The Spectrum of Space and Capital Planning in Florida and Georgia

The Florida State and Georgia University Systems employ varied approaches to their space standards, planning, and capital programs. We’ll compare these approaches and discuss best practices for determining the effectiveness of space use and the planning process.
Abstract: Space planning and capital programming should reflect an institution’s role and mission. Relating data analysis to institutional priorities is key to effectively communicating institutions’ needs to funding agencies. The Florida State and Georgia University Systems employ varied approaches to their space standards, planning, and capital programs. We’ll compare these approaches and discuss best practices for determining the effectiveness of space use and the planning process. Come learn about accuracy in space planning metrics, how to appropriately apply them in campus-wide planning and building programming, and how to relate needs to your institution’s strategic goals and performance indicators for funding.

Princeton is balancing future focus (planning for 200 years) with the pressing need to implement initial phases quickly and efficiently. South of its historic campus, Princeton is expanding into land that has been preserved for the past century to build its Lake Campus, a new center for research, discovery, recreation, and student life. Abstract: Yale-NUS College in Singapore developed a model of experiential learning to help students develop the the knowledge and skillset necessary to thrive in fast-paced, multicultural societies. To support this innovative educational experience that blends living and learning, a new campus was designed and built. We'll discuss Yale-NUS's unique educational model, the master planning and programming process for its new campus, and the campus's design. We'll also share lessons learned from designing the first residential and liberal arts college campus in Asia.

A Growing Business School’s Vertical Campus in a Leased Downtown Location

This session will delve into the opportunities and challenges involved with locating a Johns Hopkins University's new business school in a leased, downtown, high-rise building mixing students with other occupants of the building.
Abstract: As institutions build out their campuses and land becomes limited, they must find creative and economical ways to expand. Johns Hopkins University (JHU) leased a high-rise building in downtown Baltimore as an alternative campus environment to develop its new Carey Business School, a strategic move JHU made to connect to business leaders, faculty, and potential students. The business school has taken on more space as it has grown, which required the school to plan through the lens of short-term and medium-term timeframes in a high-rise environment. This session will delve into the opportunities and challenges involved with locating a professional school in a leased, downtown, high-rise building mixing students with other occupants of the building.

This educational facility reinvigorated a declining neighborhood and served as a catalyst for economic revitalization, urban renewal, and a unique learning community for students. Expanding Residential Accommodation With Limited New Construction

Come learn how a 2016 housing planning study that started with an inventory analysis quickly evolved into an ongoing program to add 100+ beds per year beginning in 2017.
Abstract: New dorm construction takes time and funding that often competes with the ongoing need to upgrade existing dorms. Despite limited resources, campus planning and capital programs teams are successfully doing both. Tufts University's first housing program since the 1970s is transforming the undergraduate residential experience two-fold: by rapidly increasing the on-campus bed supply in existing facilities and by renewing residential buildings.
