Planning for the Future of the Smart Campus

This session will draw from foresight analysis and interviews with campus leaders to consider the necessary adjustments to pedagogy, learning spaces, and emerging technologies and recommend appropriate planning and design approaches for navigating the year(s) ahead.
Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has radically altered expectations on campuses everywhere, fundamentally disrupting every aspect of academic institutions with unknown long-term consequences. This session will draw from foresight analysis and interviews with campus leaders to consider the necessary adjustments to pedagogy, learning spaces, and emerging technologies and recommend appropriate planning and design approaches for navigating the year(s) ahead.

Abstract: Panelists Gary David, Bentley University, and Linda Jerrett, Boston University, shared what their campuses are currently doing to not only accommodate students and faculty, but plan for the fall and the future of education technology. They described their approaches to decision making during this time when information is limited and the variables are unknown. This session was moderated by Parke Rhoads, a principal with Vantage Technology Consulting Group, who is an expert in strategic campus technology and is currently working with many higher education institutions during this ‘new normal’.

Universities can leverage public-private partnerships to expand beyond the boundaries of the campus to relieve space constraints as well as facilitate collaboration with allied institutions.
Abstract: Many universities struggle to meet space demands when they expand their programs near allied institutions. Public-private partnerships can solve this challenge while helping to strengthen industry and institutional partnerships. Universities can leverage public-private partnerships to expand beyond the boundaries of the campus to relieve space constraints as well as facilitate collaboration with allied institutions. Space demands are significant challenges that need to be addressed and this session will show you an alternative approach to alleviating space needs.

When building a vision for large land parcel redevelopment as a mixed-use, vibrant district, it is important to have an adaptive planning process with strong leadership and inclusive dialogue. Experiences From the Arena Classroom

Abstract: In 2015, Oregon State University's 300- and 600-seat arena classrooms welcomed their first students. Now, we have detailed analysis that measures the effectiveness of these classrooms. This session will discuss optimal pedagogical strategies for round classrooms, explain the IT infrastructure that makes these spaces successful, and provide insight into how data is analyzed for meaningful feedback. We'll share initial research on academic impact, faculty feedback, lessons learned, and next-generation trends in arena classroom design.

On-campus Student Housing

Compare Approaches for Construction and Delivery

Come learn from campus facilities planning and student affairs officials, who will address the pros and cons of different delivery methods (P3, purchase/renovation, and conventional construction) from the perspective of up-front costs, operating and maintenance factors, student experience, and functionality.
Abstract: On-campus living has been linked to student success and is a key factor in admissions decisions. As campuses look to expand and improve their housing inventories in a challenging fiscal environment, there are more options than ever available. One institution will share its recent experiences with several of these options. The University of Massachusetts (UMass) Lowell has more than doubled its on-campus housing inventory in the past five years using a combination of P3, real estate acquisitions, and conventional construction. This session will compare the relative benefits and particular challenges in utilizing these types of housing delivery methods.
