Abstract: Examines the rapid expansion of U.S. branch campuses in Japan in the 1980s and early 1990s, of which nearly two-thirds have now closed. Based on an in-depth study of seven campuses and nearly 50 interviews, the author identifies common problems and makes recommendations for establishing branch campuses overseas.
