Creative Approaches from Urban Universities

Abstract: Urban campuses are under stress, but in this session we'll share planning and design approaches to help urban institutions thrive as well as navigate strategic priorities, partnerships, programming changes, facilities, and real estate strategies. We'll highlight approaches and lessons learned from two New York City institutions during the pandemic, including creatively retrofitting their campus facilities amidst a crisis period of declining revenue and enrollments. Transforming Stirling’s Museum

Beginning with the project's conception and taking you through its planning, design, and construction, we will outline our investigation, historic research, and analysis of Harvard University's Stirling-designed postmodern museum to inform its transformation into a vibrant academic building housing a variety of programs.
Abstract: All colleges and universities have existing building stock that they need to repurpose in order to fit contemporary campus paradigms. Beginning with the project's conception and taking you through its planning, design, and construction, we will outline our investigation, historic research, and analysis of Harvard University's Stirling-designed postmodern museum to inform its transformation into a vibrant academic building housing a variety of programs. In this session, we'll establish a strategic and creative framework for adaptive reuse that you can use to reposition historic and architecturally-significant buildings on your campus.

Abstract: Austin Community College District (ACCD) has adapted to changing times and students’ evolving needs by using an integrated planning process, focusing on the future of education, and designing for flexibility. We’ll explore how ACCD transformed a declining mall into the Highland Campus, which supports student success through embracing new pedagogies, technology, and integrated programs that prepare students for the future. The Impending Enrollment Crash

We'll discuss the demographic decline, institutions already affected, and proactive strategies for addressing it (already undertaken by some).
Abstract: Higher education enrollments have trended downwards for each of the last eight years and are poised to enter a decade-long freefall. This demographic decline will force institutions to confront a new structural reality, including an unprecedented wave of downsizing, mergers, and even closures, but only a handful of institutions have begun to respond proactively. A deeper understanding of the enrollment crash is essential. We'll discuss the demographic decline, institutions already affected, and proactive strategies for addressing it (already undertaken by some).

Abstract: Yale-NUS College in Singapore developed a model of experiential learning to help students develop the the knowledge and skillset necessary to thrive in fast-paced, multicultural societies. To support this innovative educational experience that blends living and learning, a new campus was designed and built. We'll discuss Yale-NUS's unique educational model, the master planning and programming process for its new campus, and the campus's design. We'll also share lessons learned from designing the first residential and liberal arts college campus in Asia.
