Abstract: Austin Community College District (ACCD) has adapted to changing times and students’ evolving needs by using an integrated planning process, focusing on the future of education, and designing for flexibility. We’ll explore how ACCD transformed a declining mall into the Highland Campus, which supports student success through embracing new pedagogies, technology, and integrated programs that prepare students for the future. Abstract: Over the past two decades, specialized graduate schools and high-value research resources have begun to expand past traditional campuses and into urban cores. By moving these programs and resources from relatively isolated campuses into an existing ecosystem, university leaders are signaling the urban campus’s value in both attracting the right talent and supercharging their research capabilities. These projects, if successful, create and solidify a beneficial relationship between the campus and local industries and communities. Abstract: Yale-NUS College in Singapore developed a model of experiential learning to help students develop the the knowledge and skillset necessary to thrive in fast-paced, multicultural societies. To support this innovative educational experience that blends living and learning, a new campus was designed and built. We'll discuss Yale-NUS's unique educational model, the master planning and programming process for its new campus, and the campus's design. We'll also share lessons learned from designing the first residential and liberal arts college campus in Asia.

“Relic or Relevant” in Discourse, Pedagogy, and Community Today?

This presentation will address how a strong campus identity can create community engagement, facilitate discourse, and influence pedagogy through architecture that recalls the past, is relevant to the present, and can adapt to the future.
Abstract: Stanford University's historic Main Quadrangle reflects a unique design and mission as envisioned by the founders and communicated through its architecture. But does this model still contribute to student engagement and learning? We will discuss the pedagogical, civic discourse, and community function of the Stanford Quadrangle and Memorial Church, highlighting perspectives of students, faculty, staff and alumni. This presentation will address how a strong campus identity can create community engagement, facilitate discourse, and influence pedagogy through architecture that recalls the past, is relevant to the present, and can adapt to the future.

A Growing Business School’s Vertical Campus in a Leased Downtown Location

This session will delve into the opportunities and challenges involved with locating a Johns Hopkins University's new business school in a leased, downtown, high-rise building mixing students with other occupants of the building.
Abstract: As institutions build out their campuses and land becomes limited, they must find creative and economical ways to expand. Johns Hopkins University (JHU) leased a high-rise building in downtown Baltimore as an alternative campus environment to develop its new Carey Business School, a strategic move JHU made to connect to business leaders, faculty, and potential students. The business school has taken on more space as it has grown, which required the school to plan through the lens of short-term and medium-term timeframes in a high-rise environment. This session will delve into the opportunities and challenges involved with locating a professional school in a leased, downtown, high-rise building mixing students with other occupants of the building.

Abstract: Monroe Community College opened its new urban campus in fall 2017 through an initiative that repurposed an industrial complex into a vibrant community college steeped in town/gown relationships that provide mutual benefits. This educational facility reinvigorated a declining neighborhood and served as a catalyst for economic revitalization, urban renewal, and a unique learning community for students. In this session, you will gain insight into the relevant planning and operational steps taken to revitalize an existing facility to support student success.
