Creative Approaches from Urban Universities

We'll highlight approaches and lessons learned from two New York City institutions during the pandemic, including creatively retrofitting their campus facilities amidst a crisis period of declining revenue and enrollments.
Abstract: Urban campuses are under stress, but in this session we'll share planning and design approaches to help urban institutions thrive as well as navigate strategic priorities, partnerships, programming changes, facilities, and real estate strategies. We'll highlight approaches and lessons learned from two New York City institutions during the pandemic, including creatively retrofitting their campus facilities amidst a crisis period of declining revenue and enrollments. This requires creativity and grit. This session will demonstrate how to meet complex needs for economic mobility and the workforce through several diverse partnerships involving campus buildings, major public realm investments, and a $300 million public-supported levy. You’ll learn about various sources you can use to achieve successful project results—city capital and operational money, voters, private sector—as well as how you can nurture your campus and community partnerships for the long term.

Abstract: Over the past two decades, specialized graduate schools and high-value research resources have begun to expand past traditional campuses and into urban cores. By moving these programs and resources from relatively isolated campuses into an existing ecosystem, university leaders are signaling the urban campus’s value in both attracting the right talent and supercharging their research capabilities. These projects, if successful, create and solidify a beneficial relationship between the campus and local industries and communities. Universities can leverage public-private partnerships to expand beyond the boundaries of the campus to relieve space constraints as well as facilitate collaboration with allied institutions.
Abstract: Many universities struggle to meet space demands when they expand their programs near allied institutions. Public-private partnerships can solve this challenge while helping to strengthen industry and institutional partnerships. Universities can leverage public-private partnerships to expand beyond the boundaries of the campus to relieve space constraints as well as facilitate collaboration with allied institutions. Space demands are significant challenges that need to be addressed and this session will show you an alternative approach to alleviating space needs.
