Five Trends in Higher Education Design

Just a few years ago we would strive to utilize a space during 60 percent of its usable hours; now we are asked to strive for 70 to 80 percent utilization.

Abstract: The design of higher education facilities is increasingly seen by university leadership as a strategic tool to attract and retain top faculty, staff, and students. The design of space has also been linked to increased levels of innovation, creative thinking, and collaboration. But with greater pressure from state and national governments to cut costs, how can institutions of higher learning ensure that the buildings they design are cost efficient and still effective? In her article, architect and SCUP member Debi McDonald outlines five trends in higher education design and how they can assist institutions in meeting their objectives.

Renovation/Expansion of Administration Building Offers Successful Paradigm for Integrated Planning and Collaborative Design

Sustainability fits well with any renovation project as “adaptive reuse” considerations are inherent in the process.

Abstract: This article describes planning and design processes between architect and client for renovations and additions to the Brault Administration Building at Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) in Annandale, Virginia, a Washington, DC, suburb. Highlighting sustainability through adaptive reuse, this article describes in detail logistical planning for temporary relocation of building occupants, as well as collaborative communication between NOVA officials and architects for achieving design objectives. This article also details the scope of renovations and square footage added to this 1980s-era structure and references Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED), including sustainable practices for obtaining and disposing of building materials. The overall message conveyed by this renovation project is the importance of collaborative communication in terms of both planning and design, which can also offer new paradigms for building modernization and reuse at other community college campuses.

From Living Buildings to Living Campuses

By living and learning in an environmentally conscious community, students learn to consider the impact of their everyday decisions.

Abstract: Sustainable planning is a powerful tool in creating campus facilities that are environmentally, economically, and academically beneficial. As interconnected communities, college campuses provide an excellent model for sustainable intervention strategies. The University of British Columbia and the City University of New York’s Lehman College have both initiated “living building” projects in which engineering systems are designed to behave like thriving organisms. Clarkson University and Wentworth Institute of Technology are both planning student centers designed to tap into excess energy loads. Each of the projects presented in these case studies began with fundamental and smart planning.

Dos and Don’t of Historic Preservation on Campus

Restoring fine old buildings is now easier and less expensive, with the right planning.

Abstract: While historic preservation of campus architecture has become widely supported within the last generation, it has at the same time become more complicated. Ehrenkrantz and Eckstut have suggested a three part planning strategy. Part one: planners should gather basic informationon each campus building. Next each part of the building should be rated for preservation. 1 might mean a detail or space of great importance which should be carefully restored, while 5 might be an unimportant space which should be modernized to suit current needs. Part two: A phased plan should be develop which spans the next decade with proirities established and a clear sequence including cost estimates. Flexibility should be built into renovations and new construction as anticipation of further renovation. Part three: The next step is to identify athe means and methods weighing such as availability of materials and suitablility of today's program. If a preservation campaign is well planned it can be done well at the same cost of even under the cost of new construction, and will demonstrate the respect for history and culture embodied in the institution.

A Major Step for Solar Heating

Abstract: An eight-year-old, rapidly growing institution serving the Denver metropolitan area will soon have the nation's largest installation heated by solar energy. To construct the North Campus of the Community College of Denver, state agencies and legislators have agreed to fund a project with 8 percent higher initial costs in anticipation of long-term savings. In this article, the author describes the evolution of this significant project.

Case of the Vanishing Pews?

Abstract: Leveling or even declining enrollment and the current economic recession in higher education have forced many colleges to suspend or cut back plans for new construction and to consider the re-use and recycling of existing buildings. One candidate for rehabilitation: the campus chapel. The possibilities were examined at a two-day conference at Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio February 26-27, which provided the basis for this article.
