Abstract: HBCUs have a tradition of providing affordable, culturally accessible higher education to minority and first-generation students as they support disadvantaged communities. The evolution of planning, partnerships, and pedagogy at HBCUs provides lessons for any stressed institution. United Negro College Fund and HBCU college leaders will examine enrollment, instruction, student success, historic preservation, and fundraising in a post-pandemic world and explore how we can transform these challenges into successes. Join the panel for an engaging discussion about physical, academic, financial, and operational strategies for reshaping and strengthening HBCUs and apply lessons learned to address diversity, equity, and inclusion at your institution.

Abstract: Urban campuses are under stress, but in this session we'll share planning and design approaches to help urban institutions thrive as well as navigate strategic priorities, partnerships, programming changes, facilities, and real estate strategies. We'll highlight approaches and lessons learned from two New York City institutions during the pandemic, including creatively retrofitting their campus facilities amidst a crisis period of declining revenue and enrollments. Join us to learn new physical, academic, financial, and operational strategies that can reshape your campus while ensuring its long-term success.

Abstract: Gallaudet University actively engages in joint-venture enterprises to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion in the public realm by leveraging university aspirations to create a more socially-just society. In this session, we'll share how Gallaudet's 2022 campus master plan motto 'From Isolation to Innovation' inspires mixed-use redevelopment to serve as a bridge between languages and social barriers. Come learn how you can facilitate agency for all by using our model for leveraging campus assets to develop more equitable space and improve the wellbeing of your campus community.

Abstract: On-campus living has been linked to student success and is a key factor in admissions decisions. As campuses look to expand and improve their housing inventories in a challenging fiscal environment, there are more options than ever available. One institution will share its recent experiences with several of these options. The University of Massachusetts (UMass) Lowell has more than doubled its on-campus housing inventory in the past five years using a combination of P3, real estate acquisitions, and conventional construction. This session will compare the relative benefits and particular challenges in utilizing these types of housing delivery methods. Come learn from campus facilities planning and student affairs officials, who will address the pros and cons of different delivery methods (P3, purchase/renovation, and conventional construction) from the perspective of up-front costs, operating and maintenance factors, student experience, and functionality.
