2019–2020 SCUP Fellow Angela Foss—Research Presentation

The research project by SCUP Fellow Angie Foss was to explore the opportunities to bring online learners virtually into Southern New Hampshire University’s new, state-of-the-art Innovation and Design Education building for their College of Engineering, Technology, and Aeronautics. Her research included the development of two modes of delivery—remote labs and augmented reality/virtual interactions—and she also discusses the impact to the project by the immediate shift to all-remote learning due to COVID-19.
Abstract: SNHU recently built a state-of-the-art engineering facility called the Innovation and Design Education building (IDE), for their College of Engineering, Technology, and Aeronautics (CETA).

The Relationship between Accreditation and Integrated Planning

This discussion explores the findings from a year-long SCUP Fellows Research Project on the relationship between integrated planning and accreditation. Using the Middle States Commission on Higher Education as a case study and the SCUP integrated planning maturity model as a framework, we discuss potential synergies to support institutional planning.
Abstract: In the current higher education climate, the importance of integrated planning cannot be overstated. Accreditors and planners can work together to assist institutions develop a culture of integrated planning. This discussion explores the findings from a year-long SCUP Fellows Research Project on the relationship between integrated planning and accreditation. Abstract: Campuses focus on safety as they welcome students back into residence halls—but it won't be the only thing they consider. The purposeful design of campus housing, from its earliest days, has had to nurture the community and ensure safety simultaneously. When done properly, that sense of shared residence promotes safety as the residents look out for one another both consciously and subconsciously. However, with the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, a new threat has been introduced. What happens now when an instrumental source of protection and fellow students and residents may become the source of the danger? Throw into the mix the fact that features and strategies to keep residents separated flies in the face of generations spent striving to bring them together. In this new normal, the mission of community and collaboration hasn't changed, but the ways in which it is achieved may have to.

Fostering Innovation on Ohio’s Co-Located Campuses Through Collaborative Planning

This research project investigates whether co-located institutions, specifically, and competing institutions of higher education, more generally, could use the concept of “collaborative planning” to achieve mutual success.
Abstract: This research project investigates whether co-located institutions, specifically, and competing institutions of higher education, more generally, could use the concept of “collaborative planning” to achieve mutual success. Collaborative planning is a conceptual framework from urban planning that emphasizes “partnership,stakeholder involvement, collaboration, and consensus-oriented decision-making” as core principles of planning (Vandenbussche, Edelenbos, and Eshuis 2017). It is an effective tool for transcending competition, negotiating disagreements, and achieving increased institutional collaboration and innovation.

Abstract: An institution's success is intrinsically linked to that of its students. High-quality living/learning spaces play a critical role in supporting student achievement, building campus community, and bolstering recruitment and retention. Master plans are more than a campus-wide tool, and with thoughtful planning and execution, institutions can craft a vision tailored to student needs related to housing, dining, and the co-curricular student experience. Using concrete examples, this session will illustrate how student experience-driven planning and creative implementation strategies can bolster student success while using institutional resources more effectively.

Using Alumni Surveys to Assess the Impacts of Active Learning Spaces on Development of Collaboration Skills

This is a SCUP Fellow Research Project Final Report for the 2018–2019 program. The goal of this research was to evaluate the gains, if any, in the collaboration skill development of students who experienced part of their undergraduate or graduate learning within active learning spaces at Thomas Jefferson University, and to attempt to pinpoint the factors contributing to that.
Abstract: There is a growing interest in examining the relationship between active learning spaces and development of soft skills. The overall goal of this research was to evaluate the gains, if any, in the collaboration skill development of students who experienced part of their undergraduate or graduate learning within active learning spaces at Thomas Jefferson University, and to attempt to pinpoint the factors contributing to that.

To meet the goal, the researcher designed a study to assess perceived impact of use of active learning spaces, targeting alumni. Although many such studies rely on reflections from current students during or shortly after their use of learning spaces, the unique contribution of this research is that it gathered impact perceptions of learning spaces from persons after they experienced collaborative work activities in their career settings beyond academia.
