Abstract: While nontraditional students now make up the majority of most student bodies, we continue to use physical planning outreach and engagement tools designed for traditional students. This session shares how we developed new practices and tools to deliver better campus experiences for students from nontraditional backgrounds, yielding social equity in campus planning and building design. You will learn about new physical planning engagement and assessment tools that reveal and remedy the disparities nontraditional students encounter in their lives on campus.

Taking POE to the Next Level to Measure Space Performance

Taking post-occupancy evaluation (POE) to the next level, tools have been developed to reveal the measurable factors defined by users’ actions: frequency, duration, and usage of a desk, room, building, and campus.
Abstract: Measuring environmental comfort and user preferences gives insights into qualities of space that enhance health and educational performance. Taking post-occupancy evaluation (POE) to the next level, tools have been developed to reveal the measurable factors defined by users’ actions: frequency, duration, and usage of a desk, room, building, and campus. Unveiling the data and recognizing the trends provides actionable outcomes for operations and maintenance as well as the design of future projects.

Modeling Wellness, Inclusion, and Sustainability on an Evolving, Discourse-Rich Campus

Explore how a single project at San Francisco State University—in this case the first major ground-up building in 24 years—models wellness, inclusion, and sustainability for other projects, plans, and policies on an evolving campus.
Abstract: Fostering conversation and engagement transcends merely providing gathering spaces—it’s about cultivating an ethos of wellness, inclusivity, and sustainability, as modeled by the Mashouf Wellness Center at San Francisco State University. Explore how a single project—in this case the first major ground-up building in 24 years—models wellness, inclusion, and sustainability for other projects, plans, and policies on an evolving campus. We will share approaches to engaging students in an inclusive design process and strategies for designing spaces that encourage discourse and cultivate an ethos of inclusivity and wellness.

“Relic or Relevant” in Discourse, Pedagogy, and Community Today?

This presentation will address how a strong campus identity can create community engagement, facilitate discourse, and influence pedagogy through architecture that recalls the past, is relevant to the present, and can adapt to the future.
Abstract: Stanford University's historic Main Quadrangle reflects a unique design and mission as envisioned by the founders and communicated through its architecture. But does this model still contribute to student engagement and learning? We will discuss the pedagogical, civic discourse, and community function of the Stanford Quadrangle and Memorial Church, highlighting perspectives of students, faculty, staff and alumni. This presentation will address how a strong campus identity can create community engagement, facilitate discourse, and influence pedagogy through architecture that recalls the past, is relevant to the present, and can adapt to the future.
