Integrated Planning Was Leveraged to Optimize Community Participation in the University of California, Berkeley’s Campus Master Plan

The most effective master plans are those that reflect the myriad voices of the institution. Engagement should be informative, inclusive, meaningful, and fun—and should be the product of an integrated process.

Abstract: The most effective master plans are those that reflect the myriad voices of the institution. We’re finding the engagement process is fast becoming as important a product of the plan as the plan itself. Engagement should be informative, inclusive, meaningful, and fun—and should be the product of an integrated process. Leveraging the University of California, Berkeley’s Campus Master Plan as a case study, this article provides a framework for developing custom engagement strategies, and highlights examples, lessons learned, and tips for optimizing meaningful participation.

This webinar was hosted by the University Risk Management & Insurance Association (URMIA) and extended to SCUP members. It focused on the various resources publicly available for higher education institutions to review as they begin to contemplate how and when to re-open their physical locations.
Abstract: This discussion focused on the various resources publicly available for higher education institutions to review as they begin to contemplate how and when to re-open their physical locations. At recording time, the presenters had recently completed the URMIA “Checklist of Checklists for Returning to Campus,” in conjunction with the National Association of College and University Business Officers (NACUBO).

You can take this useful Excel-based tool back to your institution to identify the top risks that should be prioritized in campus planning efforts.

UW Bothell/Cascadia College Master Plan

Committed Dialogue and Leveraged Partnerships

We will discuss how the implementation of our master plan galvanized collaboration and amplified partnerships among two co-located institutions, public agencies, and the Bothell community to creatively address capital funding and implement needed growth.
Abstract: We will discuss how the implementation of our master plan galvanized collaboration and amplified partnerships among two co-located institutions, public agencies, and the Bothell community to creatively address capital funding and implement needed growth. The plan maps internal/external partnership opportunities, including shared academic buildings, public-private student housing, and a regional transit center. The transition from planning to project implementation succeeded because we emphasized communication and collaboration, strengthening relationships between institutions, agencies, and the broader community.

Tour: UW Bothell and Cascadia College Campus

A tour of the co-located University of Washington (UW) Bothell and Cascadia College campuses, presented in the context of development opportunities and new regulations from the 2017 Campus Master Plan.
Abstract: The co-located campus of the University of Washington (UW) Bothell and Cascadia College (CC) undertook a comprehensive campus master plan and environmental impact statement that fully engaged the city of Bothell, the on-campus community, campus neighbors, and the broader community. The plan accommodated newly acquired property and new uses such as housing. It also revised development regulations, land use, and permit development processes while engaging a wide range of interest groups. This talk provided an overview of University of Maryland's (UMD) strategic plan and how it is supported by the five-year update to the university’s facilities master plan, approved in 2017. It discussed current local and regional planning initiatives as well as campus and community development projects, including the associated partnerships and collaborations with municipal, organizational, and private-sector partners.
