Abstract: Planning is often practiced as a tactical tool to accomplish a set of specific tasks. However, planning can also be a powerful strategic tool that guides decision making. Planning as a strategy involves defining expected outcomes and structuring the means to achieve those outcomes. The three factors essential and hierarchical to strategic planning are clear expectations, clear actions to achieve the expectations, and integrated resources to support those actions. Planning as a strategy also requires considering how the effects of any given decision are connected to other relevant actions or decisions. Through these means, owners can better understand inherent risks and achieve their desired vision.

Abstract: An outcome of strategic planning at the University of Calgary is institutional-wide redesign of undergraduate curriculum. Implementation of a new curriculum framework comes hand in hand with the rewards and challenges of change. This article reviews the collaborative process used to effect change and "rules" for those leading that process at the departmental level.

Abstract: Since investment returns on colleges' endowments have been strong in recent years, the question arises of whether colleges' endowment spending rates should also be revised upward. The article shows how recent returns change the historical averages upon which the endowment spending rate may be based, highlights how the extent of change depends on how far back one's historical perspective goes, and warns against employing an historical perspective so short as to focus solely on recent buoyant returns.
