From Academic Vision to Physical Manifestation

Community colleges face unique and varied expectations of their vision and mission. Mt. Hood Community College’s master planning process exemplifies a complicated comprehensive master planning effort that incorporated those expectations, its academic plan, its fiscal capabilties, and its capital plan.

Abstract: This community college-based case study describes and analyzes how a new mission and vision adopted by the college trustees was translated into a facility master plan. The vision is designed to serve the needs of the community and facilitate economic development, especially in the areas of health occupations, biotechnology and information/engineering technology. The facility master plan reflects the physical manifestation of the vision with flexibility to meet future changes. Finally, the unsuccessful efforts of the college to fund the facility plan via a local bond measure are described. An earlier version of this paper was presented at “The Road to Comprehensive Planning,” a SCUP workshop held at the University of Technology in Sydney, Australia, from February 20–22, 2002.

Environmental Behavior Research and the Design of Learning Spaces

Designers and clients, whether in education or the corporate world, will each enjoy the way existing environmental/behavior research can be applied to the thoughtful consideration of these archetypes, either standing alone or used in combinations to create rich, interactive learning spaces.
Abstract: Clearly, space affects learning behavior. Yet even in the Knowledge Age, designers go back constantly to familiar Agrarian and Industrial Age learning space models. SCUPer Lennie Scott-Webber worked assiduously to comb through the latest behavioral and sociological research relating to how people interact with the built environment. She’s taken what used to “sit on shelves in the ivory halls of academe” and has applied it to the physical design of interior learning spaces.

Scott-Webber’s work, shared in this elegant book with clear and over-sized diagrams and charts, establishes five different archetypal environments that support knowledge sharing: Environments for Delivering Knowledge; Environments for Applying Knowledge; Environments for Creating Knowledge; Environments for Communication Knowledge; and Environments for Decision Making.

There’s more to classroom design than simply considering what technology to put into the classroom. Designers and clients, whether in education or the corporate world, will each enjoy the way existing environmental/behavior research can be applied to the thoughtful consideration of these archetypes, either standing alone or used in combinations to create rich, interactive learning spaces.

The Impact of Technologies on Learning

A study at the University of Washington called “Listening to the Learner, ” asked students about their desire for using technology in coursework, and facult about current approaches/barriers. Curricula were developed that intergrate education technology in a learner-centered way.

Abstract: Today’s college students believe that learning technologies are necessary tools that should be integrated into their course work. However, faculty have not yet responded to these expectations. This qualitative study engaged approximately 100 faculty and undergraduate students at the University of Washington in focus groups to explore this discrepancy between students’ desires to utilize technology and actual faculty integration of technology. Universities and colleges can resolve this digital disconnect by assisting in planning curricula to meet student and teacher needs, aligning support and services to technology adoption to overcome present barriers, and informing the design and development of educational technology.

The High Cost of Building a Better University

Higher education facilities seem to come at premium cost, even taking into account that educational facilities tend to cost more. The authors argue that this is due to appropriate and strategic high aspirations.

Abstract: Why does it cost so much? is a question often asked about university construction. On college and university campuses, the cost of new construction and renovation will appear high relative to other construction efforts in our communities. Part of the explanation of the high construction cost lies in the complexity of what we build, the codes and standards we must meet, and the unique environment within which we build. Moreover, budgets are driven up by the choices we make when we demand that our new facilities serve as visual articulations of institutional image and quality. In short, the high cost of construction is driven by myriad strategic choices and requirements that lead to building a better university.

Indiana’s Twenty-First Century Scholars Program

Indiana’s Twenty-First Century Scholars program effectively meets the needs of high-risk and low-income students by understanding the student’s mind-set, providing mentoring relationships, being flexible with credit load minimums, and utilizing alumni for student recruitment.

Abstract: This case study analyzes the impact of Indiana’s Twenty-First Century Scholars college tuition discount program on the academic self-efficacy of high-risk, low-income students. The program is designed to increase the number of high-risk individuals attending college. The self-efficacy “training” of the program helps instill and reinforce the idea that success or failure coincides with internal effort and not external factors. Surveys were completed by 55 program participants and 42 institutional representatives at different colleges in Indiana. The program increased students’ understanding of the feasibility of attaining a college degree, heightened students’ academic confidence, and improved their overall self-esteem. The article concludes with a discussion of the implications of this program for academic planners developing programs to help high-risk students succeed in college.
