Delivering a Renovated Learning Commons for an Engaged Academic Community

Abstract: Integrated planning is essential for delivering campus facilities that support institutional vision and create a strong student academic experience. Juniata College was at a crossroads related to vision and curriculum direction while it was launching a comprehensive campaign that prioritized a library renovation. This session will focus on one provost's vision for planning and designing a learning commons around a new curriculum and share post-occupancy data to define what worked. Abstract: Campus facility design is a complex process that involves many sources of opinion and influence. Educational environments must enhance evolving pedagogies, support learning, administrative, and social functions, and accommodate ever-changing institutional needs. The systematic use of standardized evaluation tools for assessment of higher education facilities provides comprehensive insight into occupant experience from diverse, unique perspectives for informed and integrated planning decisions. In this session, we'll share practical strategies for conducting occupant evaluations across all types of facilities, as well as occupant outcome findings and the resulting planning decisions.

The University of Minnesota follows the state’s sustainable building guidelines, specifically Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), and uses post-occupancy evaluations (POE) to measure user satisfaction with campus buildings. In this session, we’ll demonstrate how to implement sustainability initiatives, which have a significant impact on campus building performance and by extension, user performance and wellbeing.

Get a Week’s Worth of Strategic Planning Done in One Day

Abstract: Strategic planners must engage a wide variety of important stakeholders in strategic planning. Fast-paced, high-impact, productive planning retreats can achieve this goal in a one day. We will discuss how we planned and implemented an 8-hour strategic planning retreat with over 100 participants, including faculty, staff, partners, friends, and students. We will cover how we prepared both facilitators and participants, and share specific activities to engage stakeholders in strategic discussions that contribute to innovation solutions and ideas for the strategic plan.

Leveraging Software to Improve Academic Programs and Faculty Hiring
