Abstract: Office space makes up about a third of all non-residential space on campuses. Post-COVID, many institutional offices struggle with providing enough office space while simultaneously creating a sense of workplace vibrancy due to the rise in remote and hybrid employees. Promoting change in higher education is tough—is it possible to fulfill the needs of all institutional offices through one style of workplace or is it necessary to consider unique needs of offices and individual employees? Join us to explore two institutional workplace case studies and apply the lessons learned on your campus.

Collaborative Town and Gown Solutions for Pedestrian Safety on Campus

Abstract: Nationwide rising crashes involving pedestrians impact the safety of your campus community. This session will cover applicable and scalable strategies Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is using to create a safer campus for pedestrians while exploring the unique challenges of pedestrian and driver safety on urban university and medical campuses. We'll share best practices from peers, a data-driven approach for cost-effective solutions, and a town and gown collaboration framework to help foster a culture of safety. Join us to begin developing a list of pedestrian safety measures and identify the necessary stakeholders for implementing these safety measures.

This session will outline necessary changes to pre-design planning processes and considerations to set projects up for success under a PDB delivery model. Abstract: A sense of belonging is critical for student wellbeing, engagement, and academic success. Social research at Marquette University illuminates how students from different identity groups perceive campus places and informs campus planning priorities. Guided by social research and inclusive placemaking, this session highlights strategies, frameworks, and implications for fostering belonging in diverse campus environments. We'll explore participatory mapping and other tactics for assessing campus belonging from a physical place perspective as well as proposing research-informed changes for future policy, operational, and design interventions.
