Abstract:

In order to meet the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education's requirements for an R2 Research Institution designation, Kean University created the University Planning Council (UPC), an inclusive university-wide body with representatives from every constituency within the university community. The UPC creates linkages between assessment and resource allocations to establish integrated university-wide planning, supporting a comprehensive restructuring of its planning processes, policies, and procedures. This session will emphasize the importance of the democratization of data, transparency, inclusivity, and capacity development in integrated planning processes.

Does hope motivate action or complacency? Does crisis induce change or despair? Nathan D. Grawe readily acknowledges this tension in The Agile College, his follow-up book to his 2018 Demographics and the Demand for Higher Education. The latter propelled the inescapable discussion throughout higher education of the looming “demographic cliff.” The Agile College suggests how agile institutions might prevent demography from becoming destiny.

Abstract: This session focuses on the unique financial challenges facing community colleges due to the pandemic. In addition to a brief overview of the range of financial challenges being experienced by the sector, two campus-based leaders will describe the reality at their respective institutions. The session will highlight the role integrated planning, aligned with resource management, plays in establishing financial stability that can support enhanced institutional effectiveness.

With a heavy use of SCUP resource materials, SCUPers Doug and JoEllyn Fountain have written the book they wish someone had handed them when they began working for eight years with a rapidly growing university in Uganda. “While North American universities are developing LEED certified buildings, we were trying to pave roads and get stable electricity. We looked long and hard for materials and advisors who could help us with basic issues.”

Abstract: Universities, like other organizations, are affected by many interrelated influences and systems. In the early 1980s, because of its below average freshmen-to-sophomore year retention rates for an institution of its type, large developmental enrollment, and poor graduation rates, Louisiana State University and A & M (LSU) did not compare to other major state universities in terms of student success rates. Using a systems theory approach to analyzing the affect of inputs on outputs, this article describes the efforts that were made to transform the quality and completion rates of undergraduate students at LSU by changing the criteria for the admission of new freshmen.
