Pursuing Carbon Neutrality Through Campus Master Planning

Climate commitments and carbon neutrality are becoming top priorities for many campuses.
Abstract: Climate commitments and carbon neutrality are becoming top priorities for many campuses. Since building engineering systems account for seventy-to-eighty percent of carbon production, all campus stakeholders are contributors to the future success of emissions goals. Despite established infrastructure, reliance on city utilities, high deferred maintenance, and financial constraints, the University of Louisville (UofL) is pursuing carbon neutrality and is on track to achieve a sixty percent reduction by 2030 and one hundred percent by 2050. This session will share necessary master planning strategies for pursuing carbon neutrality at the campus level, emphasizing the need for rigorous, multi-disciplinary stakeholder engagement.

Next-Gen Academics Driving ‘Now’ Spaces in Higher Education

Education is rapidly evolving to meet changing workplaces, fueling a race among institutions to offer wider academic tracks tailored to emerging industries. How universities compete with new, responsive programs may need to evolve, too.
Abstract: Education is rapidly evolving to meet changing workplaces, fueling a race among institutions to offer wider academic tracks tailored to emerging industries. How universities compete with new, responsive programs may need to evolve, too. From eSports and cybersecurity, to clean energy and vehicle electrification, emerging fields of study have potential for immense program growth and unique cross-disciplinary opportunities—yet, they struggle to find a home in traditional academia. Through case studies of three institutions’ newest program offerings, this session will examine what it takes to bring education tracks like eSports and clean energy to campus via highly-specialized learning environments.

2023 SCUP Campus Facilities Inventory (CFI) Review

The 2023 SCUP Campus Facilities Inventory (CFI) survey was the third iteration of the survey providing new insights about the current state of campus facilities and how institutions across the country are thinking about the future of campus and facility planning.
Abstract: The 2023 SCUP Campus Facilities Inventory (CFI) survey was the third iteration of the survey providing new insights about the current state of campus facilities and how institutions across the country are thinking about the future of campus and facility planning. This webinar will be hosted by Buro Happold Advisory (formerly brightspot strategy) SCUP’s CFI partner, and will review key findings from the survey. The hosts will then engage a panel of survey participants in a discussion about the CFI and campus planning at their institution.

Diving Into Data

Space Utilization Analysis Can Address Course Scheduling Challenges, Classroom Consolidation Issues, and Deferred Maintenance Priorities

Using data analytics and reviewing facility conditions helped Newberry College enhance space utilization and create a dynamic, adaptable campus.

From Volume 52 Number 2 | January–March 2024

Abstract: A proactive approach to master planning, rooted in empirical evidence and stakeholder input, can be emulated on campuses nationwide. The article’s authors show how a space analysis, if implemented correctly, can provide an institution’s decision-makers with the valuable data needed to create a dynamic and adaptable campus environment.

The Reactivated Campus: Do More With Less

Post-covid, many campuses are still struggling with balancing in-person, remote, and hybrid student experiences.
Abstract: Post-covid, many campuses are still struggling with balancing in-person, remote, and hybrid student experiences. Working within tight funding constraints, University of Washington (UW) Bothell developed a strategy to revitalize the campus core, double down on in-person experiences, and repurpose underutilized spaces for future flexibility. Come learn about new broadly applicable methods and solutions for revitalizing campuses in our current and future condition of blended in-person, remote, and hybrid educational models.

2023 Campus Facilities Inventory (CFI) Report

The 2023 Campus Facilities Inventory (CFI) report’s valuable facilities benchmarking data will help college and university leaders understand not only what they have now and how it compares, but also how things might change in the future.
Abstract: As leaders of colleges and universities continue to analyze changes today and plan their campuses for the future, the knowledge and insight from the SCUP community is critical. The 2023 Campus Facilities Inventory (CFI) report’s valuable facilities benchmarking data will help college and university leaders understand not only what they have now and how it compares, but also how things might change in the future.

The CFI report consists of two sections that provide a holistic picture of today while enabling institutions to crowdsource a vision for the future: current space use data and recent and planned changes to campus facilities.

Data are reported only in aggregate, protecting the privacy of each institution. Reporting focuses on findings and comparison tables by institution type (e.g., four-year public, four-year private, and two-year public), location (e.g., urban, suburban, rural), and size (i.e., in-person student headcount).

Data-Driven Design for the Evolving Academic Workplace

Interpreting diverse perspectives and synthesizing qualitative and quantitative information are key to making impactful and informed long-term decisions that drive successful student, institutional, and facility development.
Abstract:

Interpreting diverse perspectives and synthesizing qualitative and quantitative information are key to making impactful and informed long-term decisions that drive successful student, institutional, and facility development. In order to meet mounting demand, the historical center for administration at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania needed to reflect the university's forward-thinking ethos and offer flexible work settings to meet current and future occupant needs. We'll explore how the Wharton School used a performance measurement tool to examine space effectiveness and leverage lessons learned to create a more agile, resilient, and equitable future.

Data-Informed Space Utilization

Cultivating Partnerships

This resource is designed to support business officers and other institutional leaders in developing data-informed space utilization practices.
Abstract: At most institutions, physical space is a resource second only to personnel, yet it may not be managed as judiciously. Using data to understand how space is allocated, how the condition of space affects use, and how the evolving nature of space use will affect future demand can contribute to optimized space utilization while supporting institutional goals. This resource is designed to support business officers and other institutional leaders in developing data-informed space utilization practices. Published by NACUBO.

From Siloed to Sustainable

How the Connected Campus Builds Long-term Value and Agility

In this session, you'll learn how to combine digital and physical environments, promote diversity and inclusion, and implement flexibility within campus spaces to prepare your institution for a more blended world.
Abstract: Campus spaces and what they offer play a vital role in student success. By making organizational and operational changes, these spaces can better respond to transformational shifts in higher education. In order to build long-term value and agility in physical campus space, we must connect academia with industry, teaching with research, student affairs with academic affairs, online with on-campus experiences, and capital with operational planning. In this session, you'll learn how to combine digital and physical environments, promote diversity and inclusion, and implement flexibility within campus spaces to prepare your institution for a more blended world.
