Successful Strategies for Planning a Green Building

Green buildings offer many advantages over their conventional counterparts, but their development requires a set of clear environmental performance goals as well as involvement from a wide range of participants.

Abstract: Green buildings offer many compelling advantages over their conventional counterparts—increased educational performance, lower energy costs, and lower environmental impact, to name a few—so green buildings should be easier to develop. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case. Several strategies are important to avoid a protracted process. Develop a set of clear environmental performance goals (buildings as pedagogical tools, climate-neutral operations, maximized human performance), use Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED™) as a gauge of performance, and use the project to reform the campus building process. All of these steps need to involve a range of participants—students, faculty, administration, and facilities staff—to achieve the best results.

Building Better Buildings: Sustainable Building Activities in California Higher Education Systems

As major and influential owners of buildings, state governments can and should express a strong level of commitment and support for sustainable building.

Abstract: The State of California has initiated a number of policies and programs to integrate sustainable building practices into the state’s capital outlay process. Many of these efforts involve new levels of teamwork between diverse state programs and departments. The state’s higher education systems have begun to show a strong level of commitment to sustainable building and have implemented a number of sustainable building measures within their organizations. This article (1) outlines the activities and recommendations of the task force, (2) discusses sustainable building activities in California’s higher education systems, and (3) highlights key issues that California is grappling with in its implementation of sustainable building practices.

Abstract: Can organizations that purport to advance learning themselves learn relative to the global ecological trends? We take great pride in equipping our students to do well-paying work in an unsustainable economy—the rough equivalent of preparing them for duty on the Titanic. There is, however, a general acknowledgment of the larger global environmental trends but without as yet much effort to adjust institutional behavior accordingly. Although there is no single formula, organizational learning requires mastery at seven levels. This article discusses those seven levels.

Introduction: Sustainability: Taking the Long View

Abstract: Statistics demonstrate that our present land use and consumption patterns present the challenge of meeting contemporary needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs. Higher education has a special obligation to answer this challenge because it plays a role in producing the leaders, policy makers, and citizens of the world, and it uses a large share of resources to do so. To meet this challenge, sustainable practices and paradigms must permeate colleges and universities, from curricula to physical plant to leadership and institutional policies. This overview of the articles in this theme issue discusses methods for incorporating sustainability into higher education across a wide array of institutional realms.

Tenure Trends in Public, Four-Year Colleges and Universities

Abstract: This article investigates the status of tenure across various institutional types and estimates the future standing of tenure as a widespread phenomenon in American higher education. The findings of this study concur with the literature in asserting that non-tenure-track and part-time faculty are likely to comprise an increasingly significant portion of the academic faculty in the future. Thus, it is imperative that institutions develop policies and practices that effectively integrate these faculty groups into the organizational culture and maximize their talents while providing a stimulating and meaningful work experience for the part-time or contract employee.

The Next Great Wave in American Higher Education

Abstract: Four distinct waves can be discerned in the history of American higher education. The 85 years before the Civil War were characterized by the founding of hundreds of liberal arts colleges. The post–Civil War era saw the majority of these small colleges disappear, replaced by public land-grant schools. Around the turn of the last century, the giants of American industry led the founding of the great private research universities. The term "megaversity" entered the American lexicon after World War II, when thousands of returning GIs swelled the ranks of higher education; the second half of the 20th century also witnessed the proliferation of community colleges. The fifth great wave is now breaking, with for-profit competition and revolutionary teaching technologies among its main characteristics.

The SANE Research Project: Its Implications for Higher Education

Abstract: Sustainable Accommodation for the New Economy (SANE), a two-year research program funded by the European Commission, considers the impact of the new economy on people, process, place, and technology to identify new ways of accommodating work. Its focus is on the creation of sustainable, collaborative workplaces for knowledge workers across Europe, encompassing both virtual and physical spaces. This article outlines major trends in the use of physical facilities in higher education, presents the initial space environment concepts developed as part of the SANE project, and discusses their implications for the corporate workplace. The increasing implementation of distributed workplace models in the corporate sector will provide major opportunities for academic institutions.
