Abstract: 2019 presents a changing landscape as concerns mount over environmental decline, increasing atmospheric carbon, and competition for resources. Across field after field, research demonstrates the impact of the built environment on climate change and the essential role retooling the built environment must play in addressing it. Globally, a massive reallocation of resources has begun as nations commit to addressing climate change and the social and economic equity challenges confronting our increasingly crowded planet. To achieve Paris Agreement targets and advance the New Urban Agenda adopted at Habitat III, architects, planners, and owners must fundamentally transform how buildings are designed, constructed, and operated. Creative and courageous people are forging new pathways full of promise and hope. Institutions of higher learning have always been laboratories for testing new approaches at multiple scales—building, campus, and institutional. This keynote will articulate the compelling 21st century challenges and opportunities for the design and planning fields in higher education.

Abstract: Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University's (Virginia Tech) Creativity and Innovation District (CID) is a trans-disciplinary nexus drawing together students, faculty, and external partners while aligning collaborative facilities, resources, tools, and technologies that will enable it to thrive as a living-learning environment. In this session, we will share explicit, purposeful strategies for how to administer shared academic arts and campus life programs that foster interdisciplinary inquiry.

Abstract: Allied health facilities are evolving into active, problem-based learning laboratories. High fidelity manikins, sophisticated equipment, augmented reality, virtual anatomy, innovation labs, and community clinics are transforming medical education spaces. This session will explore current and emerging approaches for medical teaching environments that enhance learning outcomes as well as inventive ways of leveraging building infrastructure for maximum functionality. You will learn about current modalities and how they are shaping allied health facilities in different case studies along with challenges and opportunities associated with new and renovated facilities.

Abstract: This tour will explore the history and development University of Maryland, College Park's campus along with the UMD Arboretum and Botanical Garden. We'll discuss the organization of the campus from its 1803 origins to its 20th century expansions, which created iconic spaces lined with Colonial Revival structures. Then we'll look at the campus as both layered landscape typologies and an instrument of pedagogy and research, focusing on the formation of UMD Arboretum and Botanical Garden.

Abstract: The “Greater College Park Initiative” is a signature multi-year effort in President Wallace Loh’s leadership and administration to continue positive town/gown relations with development that enhances both the university campus and surrounding communities. This talk provided an overview of University of Maryland's (UMD) strategic plan and how it is supported by the five-year update to the university’s facilities master plan, approved in 2017. It discussed current local and regional planning initiatives as well as campus and community development projects, including the associated partnerships and collaborations with municipal, organizational, and private-sector partners.

Abstract: Pedagogies, study needs, and socialization habits are changing as student bodies become more diverse. Planners and architects must respond with new, more responsive spaces to create successful facilities. In this session, we will focus on both in-depth and high-level overviews of four new projects and how they specifically address STEM students' evolving space needs, including needs particular to first-generation and underrepresented minority students. Find out what's working at Amherst College’s newly opened Science Center and discover innovative designs for types and configurations of learning spaces at several new undergraduate STEM facilities.

Abstract: Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) started an engineering program when they purchased Daniel Webster College and inherited a strong aeronautics program, students, and faculty looking for a new educational home. SNHU, well-known for online education programs, continues to develop its traditional campus through its new College of Engineering, Technology and Aeronautics, which they planned to accommodate multiple modalities reflecting 2019 and beyond as well as exemplify academic rigor. We will demonstrate how SNHU benchmarked engineering schools, helping SNHU envision their idea for a new school and identify state-of-the-art learning environments.

Abstract: In this session, we will demonstrate how Rutgers University aligned its development model with city planning initiatives to be a partner in urban renewal at its Camden and Newark campuses. With cities around the country struggling to effect urban renewal, Rutgers University has shown how strategic off-campus development can play a significant role in revitalizing downtown centers. Come learn how large urban academic campuses can redefine their relationship to the city by partnering in the implementation of strategic urban planning initiatives, blurring their campus boundaries, and aligning campus development with community need.

Abstract: Norwich University has fundamentally transformed its academic core, updating over 45% of its teaching space on campus. Stitched together by newly conceived landscape solutions, three renovations and one new building have reinvigorated central campus. All campuses face aging core academic facilities, often housed in important historic buildings. Supporting current program needs without compromising original intent requires thoughtful and creative approaches to revitalizing these structures. Come learn how Norwich reimagined its central campus for contemporary research, teaching, and learning without compromising the integrity of its historic structures.

Abstract: This presentation will demonstrate how an innovative new typology for student small-group living has transformed and expanded group living options, locating student housing in surprising, incongruous campus spaces. Lawrence University successfully prototyped new group housing typologies in under-utilized residential spaces, supporting its goal to be fully residential without adding campus buildings. You will learn how the expanded project team, tasked with thinking outside the box, invented a new housing typology uniquely connected to the existing campus culture and the site.
