We are all trying to figure out how to safely bring students back to classrooms for the fall semester. A discussion about 6-foot physical distancing layout modifications in existing classrooms, reduced occupancy yields when dealing with fixed seating versus movable seating, creating instructor zones, creating alternate instruction spaces.

A Safe Return to Research Laboratories

The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for laboratory environments. Labs were shut down in a matter of days to follow the “stay-at-home” order. As we look forward to the reopening of labs post-COVID-19, this webinar will provide some considerations that will guide the creation of a safe and healthy lab environment as well as discussions on real challenges from universities’ perspectives.
Abstract: The COVID-19 pandemic has created unprecedented challenges for laboratory environments. Labs were shut down in a matter of days to follow the “stay-at-home” order. As some states announce reopening plans, this will allow researchers whose work requires physical presence to advance research goals or grant requirements to reopen their labs.

They described their approaches to decision making during this time when information is limited and the variables are unknown. This session was moderated by Parke Rhoads, a principal with Vantage Technology Consulting Group, who is an expert in strategic campus technology and is currently working with many higher education institutions during this ‘new normal’.

Colleagues from Demographic Perspectives and Pirie Associates, in affiliation with SCUP, discussed the challenges, priorities, solutions, and opportunities to change the way campuses operate for the future.
Abstract: COVID-19 has left universities overwhelmed and struggling to rapidly shift to new ways of operating effectively. Focusing on the interactions between people, policy, facilities, and technology is more important than ever on higher education campuses. The short-term solutions colleges are now implementing need to be embraced as lessons for the long-term. What can we learn from others working in and with higher education? What are the challenges, priorities, and solutions and, where are the opportunities to change the way campuses operate for the future?

Abstract: The University of Alaska Anchorage was prompted to start incident management planning following a 2019 earthquake, but found they still had to get creative when it came to meeting student needs in the wake of COVID-19. Interim Provost John Stalvey explains their “alternate delivery” model, how the flexibility and creativity of students and faculty have allowed them to meet student learning outcome goals, and ways they’re supporting the local economy and taking advantage of empty buildings by moving ahead with current capital projects.

Abstract: “Smart change” requires an understanding of when and how to employ routine, strategic, and transformative change. Amid COVID-19, we face an existential threat that demands institutions reimagine higher education as more inclusive, affordable, relevant, and successful. To do so, planners/leaders must emphasize the well-being and success of student/faculty/staff; develop scenarios for sustainable business models; design, develop, deliver, and train instructors to teach across and with all modalities; build collaborative networks within and across institutions; and connect with local, state, and regional businesses and industry.
