Creating a 21st Century Learning Center and Student Hub

As part of repositioning for the 21st century, Drexel University renovated the Korman Center, a 1950s library, and the academic quad to serve as a 24/7 student hub and interdisciplinary academic study center that encourages student collaboration.
Abstract: Addressing current student expectations on campuses with mid-century buildings and a tight budget requires collaboration between the client and design team as well as creative placemaking solutions. Abstract: The quadrangle is a medieval-European legacy adapted by American universities during the nineteenth century. Given technological advances and changes in society, is the nineteenth-century icon changing? Will the American campus look different in the future? With a selected group of students, faculty, alumni, and staff, we discussed the relevance—past, present, and future—of Stanford University’s Main Quadrangle—as a venue for discourse and community engagement. Despite it being a relic, we concluded that the Main Quad continues to be the heart of the Stanford campus community.

Digging Into UMass Boston's Transformational Utility, Landscape, and Roadway Project

Abstract: The University of Massachusetts Boston was an insular, car-centric campus built on a former landfill. Now, it is becoming an inviting and pedestrian friendly campus, updated for the 21st century. We'll describe the massive Utility Corridor and Roadway Relocation project that transformed the campus and share lessons learned from implementing a master plan—with focus on landscape design, multi-modal access and circulation, sustainability, and new utilities—while maintaining an occupied campus on an environmentally unique oceanside site.
