Planning for Electrification and Resilience

This session will discuss transitioning away from fossil fuels for campus heating and transportation and explore new technical, procurement, and phasing strategies to cost-effectively achieve carbon reduction and resiliency goals.
Abstract: Institutions are recognizing their climate leadership role and are committing to decarbonization. Planning for infrastructure, campus, and transportation electrification to meet aggressive carbon targets is challenging and requires holistic solutions. This session will discuss transitioning away from fossil fuels for campus heating and transportation and explore new technical, procurement, and phasing strategies to cost-effectively achieve carbon reduction and resiliency goals. As the urgency to achieve significant carbon reductions grows, we will provide you with the strategies, trends, and technologies to underpin successful plans to achieve target levels at your institution.

This session will discuss Rider University's energy master plan, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through integrating facility management and future campus development as well as incorporating energy conservation and generation options.
Abstract: In the face of climate change, aging utility infrastructures, and emerging energy technologies, campuses must be prepared to undergo dynamic change to support the institution's needs. This session will discuss Rider University's energy master plan, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 through integrating facility management and future campus development as well as incorporating energy conservation and generation options. We will demonstrate how you can assess your present facility conditions and corresponding energy consumption and develop a plan to achieve energy independence and carbon neutrality on your campus.

One Campus. Two Institutions. Three Libraries.

Discuss the evolution of three libraries built in three separate centuries on the Bronx Community College of The City University of New York campus.
Abstract: Originally intended in the late 19th century as a suburban campus for New York University, the Bronx Community College of The City University of New York campus is unique in that it has had three libraries designed and built in the 19th, 20th, and the 21st centuries by leading architects: Gould Memorial Library, a neo-classical gem designed by Stanford White; Meister Hall, a mid-century modern library designed by Marcel Breuer; and North Hall, a thoroughly 21st century library designed by Robert A. M. Stern Architects.

Libraries as repositories of knowledge have evolved over the centuries. Bronx Community College represents a case study of how libraries can (or cannot) adapt to changing times, needs, and function. Join us as we discuss the merits of each library and how their design exemplifies their evolving mission of making information more accessible over time.

Abstract: In this session we will discuss the green gauges methodology, which was developed to organize complex design information within a simple structure and help institutions invest in design strategies that serve environmental and financial goals. Design and construction teams will use this methodology to communicate strategies with stakeholders early in the process and provide consistent information regarding operational energy and the resulting carbon savings. Abstract: Norwich University has fundamentally transformed its academic core, updating over 45% of its teaching space on campus. Stitched together by newly conceived landscape solutions, three renovations and one new building have reinvigorated central campus. All campuses face aging core academic facilities, often housed in important historic buildings. Supporting current program needs without compromising original intent requires thoughtful and creative approaches to revitalizing these structures. Come learn how Norwich reimagined its central campus for contemporary research, teaching, and learning without compromising the integrity of its historic structures.

A Road Map to Carbon-Neutral Institutions in Northern U.S. Latitudes

Abstract: The imperative for higher education institutions to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions is driven by the energy required to sustain their campus facilities and by rapid, irreversible changes to the climate that threaten global infrastructures. This article provides a framework that comprehensively addresses campus facilities’ energy consumption reduction and conversion to renewable resources while helping building users become more aware of how their actions impact greenhouse gas emissions. Case studies illustrate how two different institutions developed campus energy master plans and set incremental goals toward carbon neutrality and net-zero fossil fuel energy consumption.

Creating a New Campus Destination

Abstract: Aged buildings, streets, alleys, back lots, a dense neighborhood, and historic landmarks—can these puzzle pieces add up to campus opportunities? The University of Chicago conceived an unexpected and dynamic new campus destination, gaining 150,500 sq. ft. of academic space and creating a new landscape with 36,000 sq. ft. of new open space and 60 new trees. Neighbors, aldermen, administration, and faculty shaped a campus planning process applicable to large and small colleges and universities, developed from creative and sustainable planning principles.
