Abstract: The Brandt Behavioral Health Treatment Center and Retreat of Rutgers University is the first of its kind. As a unique response to adolescent behavioral health challenges, Rutgers is developing a new clinical and research program along with a two-building on-campus residential and outpatient facility. Mental health challenges are rising among young people, and these issues require inventive and accessible solutions. This session will demonstrate how sustainable, biophilic building design can support an innovative, integrated approach to the mental health treatment of adolescents and young adults.

Abstract: Nationwide rising crashes involving pedestrians impact the safety of your campus community. This session will cover applicable and scalable strategies Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) is using to create a safer campus for pedestrians while exploring the unique challenges of pedestrian and driver safety on urban university and medical campuses. We'll share best practices from peers, a data-driven approach for cost-effective solutions, and a town and gown collaboration framework to help foster a culture of safety. Join us to begin developing a list of pedestrian safety measures and identify the necessary stakeholders for implementing these safety measures.

Abstract: Integrated planning is essential for delivering campus facilities that support institutional vision and create a strong student academic experience. Juniata College was at a crossroads related to vision and curriculum direction while it was launching a comprehensive campaign that prioritized a library renovation. This session will focus on one provost's vision for planning and designing a learning commons around a new curriculum and share post-occupancy data to define what worked. Come learn how the planning, funding, and design process behind this inclusive facility has dramatically increased library use by students, faculty, and outside groups.

Abstract: Skilled trades education programs provide a viable and equitable option for students who choose not to pursue a four-year degree. Program expansion into high schools through career and technical education promotes these pathways even further for completion and success. This session will show how Howard Community College (HCC) is responding to labor shortages in skilled trades occupations by creating educational programs and partnerships to provide additional access to high-quality jobs that offer family-sustaining wages and benefits. Join us to discover new approaches to education and partnerships that address equity gaps in economic and professional opportunities in our communities.

Abstract: Traditional strategic planning can lead to a static plan that does little to inspire implementation or true change. This session will detail a process that promotes buy-in and engagement while providing structured frameworks to support implementation and assessment. Our framework provides support for a campus community to 'live' its institutional strategic plan through the strategic planning cycle (SPC) at the unit level, informing the realization of institutional goals and outcomes. We'll provide our tools and approaches for you to access and review, as well as the rationale for developing support for your own campus communities to 'live' their strategic plan.

Abstract: The president of Carlow University identified the university’s town-gown relationships as needing assessment as the institution embarked on a significant campus revitalization that required close coordination with the City of Pittsburgh. We developed a four-quadrant framework of best practices based on an extensive literature review. To assess town-gown interactions against the framework, we interviewed city and higher education leaders, reviewed the City of Pittsburgh’s and university documents, and analyzed the university’s social media presence. Our process generated specific, actionable recommendations that resulted in the university reorganizing senior leadership position descriptions and responsibilities, revamping its social media strategy, and aligning organizational efforts to increase its visibility.

Abstract: The value of collaborative planning is in the process and the outcome. An intentional, co-creation design improves your odds of developing a meaningful plan—a plan of action and impact. By leveraging connection and collective cognition, more voices are engaged, diverse viewpoints and ideas are collected, and shared understanding is fostered. This leads to enhanced plan quality and ownership of the direction and action. The article explores the benefits of collaborative planning, the amplification of social capital, and the application of a design framework and tools for purpose-driven collaboration.

Abstract: Georgia College & State University, a public liberal arts institution, began an integrated,
collaborative, and future-focused strategic planning process during a time of uncertainty (COVID-19, enrollment declines, financial shortfalls, etc.). This planning included shared leadership across campus to develop and implement the plan, data-informed decision-making by a diverse group of steering committee members representing all areas of campus, visits to strategically identified aspirant universities, and ongoing stakeholder engagement that included student input. These strategies leveraged the inherent qualities of a liberal arts institution while addressing the challenges and opportunities that exist in public higher education.

Abstract: Success in strategic planning requires decision-making that reflects the collective vision of diverse constituents. At California State University, Fullerton we leveraged data as the essential thread in engaging our community in an inclusive strategic planning process. Data played dual roles, serving as input and output, to provide a common framework through which the ideas and wisdom of our community are reflected and shared, anchoring the strategic plan firmly in the campus voices. Our engagement through data embodied our commitment to evidence-based decision-making and contributed to the success of our strategic planning process.
