CUNY’s Path to Improving Degree Completion

In this session, you will learn about CUNY's ASAP model, how it receives operating and capital funding, and how the physical spaces that support the program were identified, designed, and renovated.
Abstract: The City University of New York's (CUNY) Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) assists students in earning associate degrees within three years by providing a comprehensive range of financial, academic, and personal supports. Completion rates at community colleges remain extremely low; however, CUNY's ASAP students earned their associate degrees at substantially higher rates than non-ASAP students, even when a longer timeframe was considered. In this session, you will learn about CUNY's ASAP model, how it receives operating and capital funding, and how the physical spaces that support the program were identified, designed, and renovated.

You will learn how the expanded project team, tasked with thinking outside the box, invented a new housing typology uniquely connected to the existing campus culture and the site.

Expanding Residential Accommodation With Limited New Construction

Come learn how a 2016 housing planning study that started with an inventory analysis quickly evolved into an ongoing program to add 100+ beds per year beginning in 2017.
Abstract: New dorm construction takes time and funding that often competes with the ongoing need to upgrade existing dorms. Despite limited resources, campus planning and capital programs teams are successfully doing both. Tufts University's first housing program since the 1970s is transforming the undergraduate residential experience two-fold: by rapidly increasing the on-campus bed supply in existing facilities and by renewing residential buildings. Abstract: Monroe Community College opened its new urban campus in fall 2017 through an initiative that repurposed an industrial complex into a vibrant community college steeped in town/gown relationships that provide mutual benefits. This educational facility reinvigorated a declining neighborhood and served as a catalyst for economic revitalization, urban renewal, and a unique learning community for students. Most of these institutions were established as the result of the Morrill Land-Grant Act of 1862. How has this mission, drafted in a much different time, held up over the years? As we move toward the third decade of the twenty-first century, many universities are evolving to better embrace changing student demographics; build industry partnerships; and reframe campus legacies to ensure that the land-grant mission still supports the needs of our times.

Abstract: The demand for graduates and technicians in the academic fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is influencing the design of specialized educational facilities in community colleges. Community colleges are increasingly aligning their academic programs to the specific economic development priorities and projected demand for skilled labor in the geographic regions they serve. It is expected that partnerships with local industry will increasingly shape curriculum development and facilities design. This trend is rapidly developing in California, where community colleges are incorporating sophisticated simulation laboratories, makerspaces, and innovation centers outfitted with advanced infrastructure and equipment, along with spaces that support the full spectrum of competencies required for graduates to succeed in the STEM labor market.
