Abstract: A state mandate to increase undergraduate enrollment, the aspiration to achieve an Association of American Universities institution profile, and a desire to become carbon neutral—we'll discuss how the University of California (UC) Riverside negotiated these competing challenges while developing its master plan. Innovation is key while achieving access improvements, research aspirations, and environmental stewardship objectives. We'll share how community college districts, private colleges, and other institutions are implementing practical solutions to the new century's challenges while maintaining the institution’s sense of place and heritage.

Abstract: Critical Race Theory (CRT) is a part of the Portland Community College's (PCC) strategic plan and has been an aspect of its academic planning for some time. Including CRT in the use and design of physical space is new and, in some ways, unknown. Learn from PCC's ongoing exploration of what it means to apply CRT to the built environment. We'll discuss how we're rethinking planning and programming activities to encourage more diverse contributions that result in spaces that support all students.

Abstract: Allied health facilities are evolving into active, problem-based learning laboratories. High fidelity manikins, sophisticated equipment, augmented reality, virtual anatomy, innovation labs, and community clinics are transforming medical education spaces. This session will explore current and emerging approaches for medical teaching environments that enhance learning outcomes as well as inventive ways of leveraging building infrastructure for maximum functionality. You will learn about current modalities and how they are shaping allied health facilities in different case studies along with challenges and opportunities associated with new and renovated facilities.

Monroe Community College opened its new urban campus in fall 2017 through an initiative that repurposed an industrial complex into a vibrant community college steeped in town/gown relationships that provide mutual benefits.
Abstract: Monroe Community College opened its new urban campus in fall 2017 through an initiative that repurposed an industrial complex into a vibrant community college steeped in town/gown relationships that provide mutual benefits. This educational facility reinvigorated a declining neighborhood and served as a catalyst for economic revitalization, urban renewal, and a unique learning community for students. In this session, you will gain insight into the relevant planning and operational steps taken to revitalize an existing facility to support student success.

CUNY’s Path to Improving Degree Completion

In this session, you will learn about CUNY's ASAP model, how it receives operating and capital funding, and how the physical spaces that support the program were identified, designed, and renovated.
Abstract: The City University of New York's (CUNY) Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP) assists students in earning associate degrees within three years by providing a comprehensive range of financial, academic, and personal supports. Completion rates at community colleges remain extremely low; however, CUNY's ASAP students earned their associate degrees at substantially higher rates than non-ASAP students, even when a longer timeframe was considered. In this session, you will learn about CUNY's ASAP model, how it receives operating and capital funding, and how the physical spaces that support the program were identified, designed, and renovated.

Abstract: The demand for graduates and technicians in the academic fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) is influencing the design of specialized educational facilities in community colleges. Community colleges are increasingly aligning their academic programs to the specific economic development priorities and projected demand for skilled labor in the geographic regions they serve. It is expected that partnerships with local industry will increasingly shape curriculum development and facilities design. This trend is rapidly developing in California, where community colleges are incorporating sophisticated simulation laboratories, makerspaces, and innovation centers outfitted with advanced infrastructure and equipment, along with spaces that support the full spectrum of competencies required for graduates to succeed in the STEM labor market.

Integrated and Informed for Our Improvement

Within the span of a year, it’s possible to make significant progress toward achieving and institutionalizing integrated planning and budgeting.

Abstract: In an era of heightened accreditation expectations, declining resources, and increasing competition, tools such as integrated planning and budgeting, evidence-based decision-making (EBDM) processes, an overarching continuous quality improvement (CQI) framework, and up-to-date technology solutions for managing planning processes are no longer optional. While Mesa Community College (MCC) has a long history of planning, the integration of planning and budgeting was limited and our planning system was outdated (as in beyond end-of-life outdated). Additionally, planning and budgeting processes lacked EBDM practices and an overarching CQI framework. MCC’s Strategic Planning Committee set about remedying all of these issues and did so within the span of a year.
